Round two of the season saw the Emus head to Launceston to take on a combined AMC Vikings/Devonport reserves side.
In one of their more exciting showings in recent years the Emus ran away with a 41-28 win.
It was one-way traffic in the early stages of the first half as the Emus ran in three unanswered tries, courtesy of Hungarian international halfback Eddy Brandon, French winger Mewan Le Razavet and club captain Adam Pandelis.
Pandelis and flanker Travis Heald helped to steady the ship for the Emus after they lost Number Eight Alex McKenzie for the game, after he was injured from an illegal spear tackle from the opposition.
The combined side were boosted in the second-half by the injection of some Tongan imports, which made for an exciting battle in the forwards.
The Tongans with their powerful running, and impressive ball play clawed back to a respectable score, with Emus coach Brett Kershaw lamenting the lack of aggression from his side in the face of a hungrier opponent.
Luke Fenech of the Emus stood up and used his enormous frame to go toe to toe with the opposition and with some strong support from Heald, Pandelis, Tim Goss, Brad van der Drift and Andy Lomas, the Emus managed to hold on for the win.
The Emus are back at the Upper Burnie Sports Centre this Saturday, where they will take on Devonport, with kick off at 1pm.
Saturday’s game will also see the Emus say Au Revoir to imports Brandon and Le Razavet, who will play their final game for the club.
Emus co-captain Travis Heald said he could not wait for the game.
“Nothing is better than running out on the pitch with something to play for beyond the win,” he said.
“A farewell to our solid French mates with their Mount Gnomon friends will be great.”
