The study investigated the development and use of computer assisted instruction and determined their effects on academic achievement of secondary school students in English Language. A quasi-experimental pretest -posttest control group was adopted for the study. The sample comprised 120 (60 boys and 60 girls) senior secondary students selected from four co-educational secondary schools in Niger State, using stratified random sampling. The instruments used were researcher developed computer assisted instruction (CAI) used as treatment instrument and English language Achievement Test (ELAT) as test instrument. The ELAT was pilot tested using two sets of scores and reliability coefficient of 0.86 was obtained. Two bypotheses were formulated and tested at 0.05 level of significance. Results obtained from pre and post tests were analyzed using Analysis of Covariance (ANCOVA) and t-test statistics. The result indicated that the students taught with CAI performed significantly better than those taught through conventional teaching method. It, further, showed that the gender of students had no significant effect on the achievement of students in English Language when taught with CAI. It was recommended,among others, that English Language teachers should be given free computer training by the government (Federal, State and Local) to enable them make adequate use of computers when supplied to schools.
