Disney Movie news, Get Published Workshop and New Book from Author Michael Tougias

Dear Readers,

Exciting news! The Disney Corporation has set the release date for the movie based on my co-written book The Finest Hours. The premier is October 9th, and the movie, starring Chris Pine as Bernie Webber, will be shown in 46 countries.

Bernie Webber was a gem of a guy. Here's an example of what happened when we were writing the book: after our manuscript was complete, and it was at the publisher for editing and design, I was having a phone conversation with Bernie and told him my dream was to see this story turned into a movie. "Well," he said, "you keep on dreaming. But if there is a movie, Don Knotts can play my part."

Besides giving equal credit to many others involved in the rescue, Bernie lavished praise on his rescue boat, numbered 36500. That little boat was what allowed Bernie and crew to perform their remarkable rescue, and he never forgot it. In an email to the co-author and myself dated January 22, 2009, Bernie sent us photos of the 36500 and wrote "Guys -- here's your boat -- if a movie is made she'll be ready, just like brand new. I won't be around but give her a kiss for me."

Two days later Bernie passed away at his home.

Hollywood heartthrob Chris Pine (seen in the recent Star Trek movie as Capt. Kirk) plays Cape Cod native Bernie Webber in The Finest Hours movie.

Here's a little prayer I recently said to him: Well, Bernie, we never got to meet in person but I'm sure glad we had all those phone conversations. I went down to the Cape and gave the 36500 a kiss like you asked. A couple of tourists wondered what I was doing, but I know what that boat and the people who restored it meant to you.  And oh, did I tell you Disney made a movie about your rescue? Chris Pine plays you. I think that is a better fit than Don Knotts.

GET PUBLISHED WORKSHOP

This workshop will be held Saturday May 9th in Franklin. Publicist Alison O'Leary and I will share what we've learned about securing a publisher, the pros and cons of self-publishing, promoting your book, writing a killer query letter and proposal, and more. I've taught this workshop in the past and it sure is a rewarding feeling when I later get a surprise email from someone who attended saying their book is now available for purchase. To register, just scroll to the bottom of this newsletter and print out the registration form.

NEW BOOK FOR MOTHER'S DAY OR FATHER'S DAY
(personalized and autographed)

Alison O'Leary and I have a brand new book, Inns & Adventures: A History and Explorer's Guide to VT, NH and the Berkshires. This book gets back to my writing roots of sharing special places, little known historical incidents, and enjoying the great outdoors. Readers will also "meet" innkeepers and learn why we found these inns the perfect destination after a day outdoors. The book is published by my favorite publisher, Adam Gamble of On Cape Publications. There's a nice quote on the back cover that gets to the heart of the book: "Enjoy our personal and often humorous accounts of tackling high peaks, finding water falls deep in the woods, hours-long bike rides on back roads and encounters with wildlife - then go out and make your own memories." Alison is also available to give 45-minute slide presentations on this book, including beautiful images of mountain glades, waterfalls and historic sites. Contact her at [email protected] for information.

(We expect to have books in stock in early May -- maybe not in time for Mother's Day but we know she'll understand!)

FOUR RECENT BOOKS FOR ADULTS AND YOUNG ADULTS (personalized and autographed)

These make great graduation gifts!

Derek's Gift: A True Story of Love, Courage and Lessons Learned, (an inspiring story of resilience and a great reminder of what is really important in our lives and what is not. It is human nature to take things for granted, so I frequently turn to this book to keep me grounded, while saying goodbye to stress.)

The Cringe Chronicles: Mortifying Misadventures With My Dad (co-written by my daughter Kristin and I) Here's a recent review: "From the second I picked up this book until the last page I was laughing out loud! It really pulls you in. I would recommend this book to teens and adults, such a great read."

Until I Have No Country: A Novel of King Philip's War (it's hard to choose a favorite book as an author, but this might be mine)

The Finest Hours (Young Adult version published by Holt)

The Finest Hours (Adult version published by Simon & Schuster)

SPEAKING FOR BUSINESS GROUPS

Lately I've had some rewarding trips around the country where I've spoken to different business groups, from the Gulf Coast CEO Forum to an association of security professionals. The two programs I offer are:

  • Leadership Lessons from The Finest Hours
  • Survival Lessons: Decision-making Under Pressure (from those who have survived against all odds)

Both talks include some amazing visuals. Some of the best bookings I've had were referrals from readers of this newsletter. If you help me secure a business speaking opportunity, I'll send you the Michael Tougias library or a $100 finder's fee!

Sadly I was required to spend some of this winter in Florida for business purposes. I heard there was some snow in New England?

A THANK YOU

Just want to thank all the people who have come to my presentations. When I started writing and speaking I was lucky to have three people in the audience. And lately the slide lectures have been packed. It's funny - the more people, the more energy, and the better the discussion at the end of the programs. For a list of where I'll be giving the presentations and on what topics visit my website  www.michaeltougias.com

Have a wonderful spring!
