KUCHING: Sarawak PKR chairman Baru Bian has been given another dare to state the party’s stand on PAS’ plan to implement hudud in Malaysia.

This time, the dare comes from BN component party Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS)’s Youth wing.

A statement issued by PRS Youth said Baru should withdraw the party’s cooperation with PAS or else Baru would be deemed to support hudud despite his reputation as an ardent Christian.

“We know very well that their loose coalition (Pakatan Rakyat) is merely for political convenience as they did not have any common principles. PAS is a political party that uses Islam and hudud to gain support from Malay voters, and PKR is to fight for its leaders’ political cause.

“Therefore, PRS Youth dares Baru Bian to state his stance on PAS hudud implementation in our multi religious country. Baru Bian should follow the footstep of their comrade DAP on hudud issue rather than hesitate in making his stance,” said the statement.

Sarawak DAP was the first to cut ties with PAS Sarawak, announcing their decision last March, months before the PAS muktamar and DAP national leadership declared Pakatan Rakyat dead.

This was after it became clear that the Islamist party was pursuing its hudud ambitions without the support of Pakatan Rakyat.

The hudud issue was also among the main reasons why both PKR Sarawak and DAP Sarawak have not been on speaking terms since last year.

The opposition pact now seemed to be in disarray with supporters and leaders of PKR Sarawak and DAP Sarawak attacking each other in the social media, especially over overlapping claims on seats in the next state election.

Baru, in a press conference on July 2, did not rule out the possibility of both parties ending up on a collision course although he hoped this could be avoided in order for straight fights against BN in all seats.

DAP Sarawak chairman Chong Chieng Jen, on the other hand, had said the party would cooperate with PKR as long as they do not cooperate with PAS.
