CHATTANOOGA, TN.- Georgia Southern's men's and women's tennis programs are gearing up for the 2014 Southern Conference Championships, beginning April 16
th-19
th at University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. The winners of the SoCon Championships will receive the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Men's and Women's Tennis Tournament.
The men's team enters the tournament as the 6
th seed, and they are scheduled to face #3 University of North Carolina Greensboro on Thursday, April 17
th, at 10:30am. The Eagles finished the regular season with a 4-5 SoCon record. Last year, the Eagles fell to College of Charleston in the quarter-finals of the Championships.
"Our focus all year is on trying to peak at the Conference tournament in April," said head coach
Nick Zieziula. "We've put in a lot of hard work and now we need to trust in what we have done and believe that we are capable of meeting the challenge. I like the match up that we have in the first round, we have some opportunities, but we are going to need to be very disciplined and stick to our game plans on each court. UNCG is a well-coached team and they do a good job of covering their weaknesses."
The women's team head into the tournament as the 6
th seed as well, but they battle #3 Chattanooga in the first round on Thursday, April 17
th at 3pm. The Lady Eagles closed out regular season play with a 4-5 SoCon record. In last year's tournament, the Eagles dropped in the quarter finals to Elon.
"The team is excited about competing in Chattanooga for the Southern Conference Championships," said head coach Amy Bonner. "We are playing well right now and coming off of a strong finish to our regular season. We hope to use this momentum to our advantage as we compete on Thursday and look to play our best when it counts."
Both teams' results will be posted on GSEagles.com shortly after completion of play. The tournament brackets can be found below.
