Stupienski Homers But Seahawks Come Up Short At Florida State, 9-8


TALLAHASSEE, Florida – Gavin Stupienski collected four hits, including a home run, but nationally-ranked Florida State held off UNCW for a 9-8 win to complete a sweep of the Seahawks at Dick Howser Stadium on Sunday.

The Seminoles ran their record to 8-3 with their fourth straight home win while the Seahawks dropped to 6-3 on the season. The three losses were by a combined four runs.
Taylor Folsom (2-0) picked up the win out of the bullpen for FSU, limiting the Seahawks to a run, unearned, on two hits over two innings. Billy Strode recorded his third save of the weekend the fifth of the season after retiring two of the three batters he faced.

Cory Gantz was tagged with the loss to drop to 1-1 on the season. Gantz entered the game as a reliever and was touched for two runs, one earned, on a hit and a walk in a third of an inning.

Stupienski homered in the third inning and added three singles later in the game. He scored four runs and knocked in one. Adding multi-hit games were Luke Dunlap with two hits and three runs batted in and Kennard McDowell, who finished 2-for-4 with a RBI double.

Taylor Walls and Gage West had three hits apiece for the Seminoles while Josh Delph added two singles.

Up next: The Seahawks open 13-game homestand on Mar. 4 when they host NC Central at 4 p.m. The game will be streamed on the Seahawk Digital Network at UNCWsports.com.

How it happened: UNCW opened a 6-2 lead in the third inning with three runs in the second and three more in the third. Florida State, however, roughed up the Seahawks for five runs in the third, chasing starter Evan Phillips, for a 7-6 lead. FSU tacked on two runs in the fourth for a 9-6 advantage.

Inside the box score: UNCW went 4-for-16 with runners in scoring positon … Four runs were knocked in with two out including all three in a three-run third inning … UNCW pitchers limited FSU to 2-for-15 in RBI opportunities … The Seminoles did not drive in any runs with two out.

Notes: The loss ran UNCW's losing streak in the FSU series to six … Seahawk pitchers combined for 27 walks on the weekend while the hitters struck out 39 times … Both teams hit .231 for the weekend … Terence Connelly extended his on-base streak to nine games with a bunt single.
