Art Miami and Sister Fairs Will Have More Exhibitors Than Art Basel’s Main Fair

See what Nick Korniloff has up his sleeve.

The Nick Korniloff art fair empire is expanding in his hometown of Miami, so it is perhaps not all that surprising that the biggest show in town during Miami Art Week this year isn’t Art Basel in Miami Beach: With 272 galleries across his three properties, Art Miami and its sister fairs CONTEXT and Aqua will boast three more dealers than the main event over in the convention center.

“Technically you could say it’s the largest program of contemporary and modern art by one fair producer in Miami this year,” Korniloff told artnet News in a phone conversation.

The total of dealers will remain at 47 for the Miami Beach-based Aqua, but up in Wynwood, Art Miami will have 125 galleries, 10 more than last year, while CONTEXT will be up to 100 participants from 90. Thanks to the growth at CONTEXT, which also had galleries request larger exhibition spaces, the fair has outgrown its previous location and will move one block north, still adjacent to Art Miami.

Among new exhibitors at CONTEXT will be London’s Paul Stolper Gallery, which is bringing an installation of light box “colorscapes” by musician, composer, and artist Brian Eno, known for his work with such musical acts as U2, David Bowie, the Talking Heads, and Elvis Costello.

Art Miami will also have a celebrity presence, with the debut of new works from Academy Award winner Adrien Brody at New York’s Benrimon Projects. The actor had a pop-up show in Miami in 2015, and has showed work over the past year at Korniloff’s Art New York and Art Southhampton fairs, where he reportedly received rave reviews from celebrities including Robert De Niro, Leonardo DiCaprio, Michael Strahan, and Brooke Shields.

“The wonderful thing about Adrien’s work is that he paints with a lot of vibrant colors, but also with meaning,” said Korniloff. “He has a message which is very strong in all of his work, whether it’s related to the environment or social and political issues.”

Bernie Taupin, the lyricist for Elton John for going on 50 years, is also expected to be an Art Miami highlight with a booth at New York’s Waterhouse & Dodd, building on the success of his showing at sister fair Art Wynwood.

For its part, Aqua, which takes its name from its venue, the Aqua Hotel, features a wide array of young, emerging, and mid-career artists. It will host a panel discussion, “Unconscious Bias and the Art World,” with partnering organization Association of Women Art Dealers (AWAD) on the morning of December 2.

When asked to described the difference between the three Miami Art Week fairs, Korniloff told artnet News that “the main difference is in the markets.”

“In Art Miami, you will find the most important works of established contemporary, modern and post war art, while in CONTEXT, you will discover artworks that are fresh and new, pushing the boundaries of contemporary art,” he added. “Aqua Art Miami is a unique, boutique art fair where one can discover new, hip galleries representing artists and art movements.”

The VIP preview for Art Miami and CONTEXT will take place on November 29 and will benefit the Pérez Art Museum Miami. Aqua will open the following afternoon, timed to the Art Basel preview. According to Korniloff, it has become a popular post-convention center stop for fair-goers, with the catchphrase “Basel to Eight, Aqua Late.”
