When Phillip Thompson (Phil) of DPhil Productions sat down with the Crowned Prince of Reggae, Dennis Brown back in June of 1999, mere weeks before his passing, little did they know they were discussing plans of recording quite possibly, few of the last known recordings by the legendary Reggae and lovers rock vocalist D. Brown. After wrapping up his final recording session at King Bravel Studio in New York, feeling completely satisfied with the session Dennis pointed at Phil, then looked him in the eyes and said, “I never bet pon a loser.”
Now fast track to winter of 2015, sixteen years later, Phil is about to unleash these three timeless recordings in the form of an EP titled “Rock On”. He believes “The time is perfect to release these timeless recordings, and remind fans, his peers and music enthusiasts that D. Brown’s music and flow is very much current and relevant in today’s Reggae music space.”
In putting together an all-star Reggae music cast to support these recordings, and give D. Brown the quality he truly deserved, for backing Phil reached out to music icons Sydney Mills (Steele Pulse), Val Douglas (The Skatalites), Dean Fraser and James “Bonzai” Caruso the five-time GRAMMY winning Producer and Recording/Mix Engineer who has had chart toppers Madonna, Mary J Blige, Notorius BIG, among many others.
“Baby Its You” is a soulful bouncy lovers rock, so intimately delivered; yet groovy and full of that harmonious Dennis Brown signature melodies.
Then comes the title track “Rock On”, a sure mover, and so recorded to be the most timeless of the three. Quite fittingly the title track to suggest the longevity of Dennis Brown’s musical legacy, as well as, the track in itself sounds as though it was recorded recently in par with today’s sounds and vibe. Punctuated by the strong rock guitar strumming of Andy Bassford who has backed Dennis Brown in the past, this track could very well make its way into the dancehalls, clubs and parties across the world.
“Somewhere Over The Rainbow” will have you bobbing your head and tapping your feet, as you drift away to the raspy yet soothing melodies of Dennis Brown. Surely a happy tune that will have you easily up and dancing in no time.
The EP will be released on December 11th digitally; and come November 13th, the lead single and title track “Rock On” will be officially premiered on Reggaeville.com, with the EP available for pre-order at a later date.
