This Week in Women's History:
- July 28, 1879 - Happy Birthday to Lucy Burns, suffragist, who formed National Woman's Party with Alice Paul, picketed the White House for women suffrage, and was arrested 6 times.
- July 30, 1940 - Happy Birthday to Patricia Schroeder, U.S. Representative from Colorado (1973-1997). She was the first woman to serve in U.S. Congress from Colorado, the first woman on the House Armed Services Committee, promoted the Family and Medical Leave Act of 1993, and was president and CEO of the Association of American Publishers (1997-2008).
- July 31, 1879 - Happy Birthday to Margarete Bieber, an art historian and professor of art and archaeology. She was the second female university professor in Germany (1919) before immigrating to the U.S. to teach at Barnard College and Columbia University. She published numerous academic texts and was named to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1971.
- July 31, 1924 - Happy Birthday to Geraldine Hoff Doyle, possibly the model for the World War II "We Can Do It" poster which came to symbolize Rosie the Riveters, women who worked in factories to support the war effort.

Every year we hire student staff members to join our professional staff to fill six important positions: Social Media and Outreach, Office Assistant, Mentoring Program Assistant, Events & Programming Assistant, Resource/Reference Specialist Assistant, and Sexual Assault Program Assistant. 2014-2015 Internship Opportunities Available at the Women's Center!
Interested in an internship through the Women's Center? Current internships available are:
Body rEvolution (1 credit/semester): This peer educaiton and outreach internship is activism in action! Students will have the opportunity to engage and inspire their peers to think about our bodies in an entirely different way.
Women's Center Blog Contributor (1 credit/semester): This internship provides an opportunity for students to write short, timely articles about women's and gender issues on topics that are relevant to and affect today's college women.
Women's Center Blog Editor (3 credits/semester): The Women's Center Blog Editor is responsible for ongoing development and maintenance of the Women's Center blog, including writing, editing, posting, and promoting online content. The Blog Editor supervises the student blog contributors, reads and edits their written submissions, and posts them to the blog.
Women's Mentoring Program (1 credits/semester): The Women's Mentoring Program connects first-year and transfer undergraduate women one-on-one with a personal mentor (a UI staff or faculty member, or a local community member) who strives to provide them with support, guidance, and encouragement throughout their first year of college. Mentees will meet regularly with mentors, participate in projects, attend diversity events, and keep a journal.
Women's Center Programming Internship (1-3 credits/semester): This internship is for a student interested in developing an educational outreach program of their own or assisting the Women's Center with an existing program.

Fall 2014 semester, T/TR 2:00-3:15 pm
Activists for human rights and social change have created eloquent literary texts and powerful theater productions and performance art. This class looks both at performance/literary texts (plays, poems, songs, mostly) and at the history of a number of different social movements in the U.S. Contact Dr. Maggie Rehm for more information!
