Driftwood..
I wonder what kind of journey this tree has had? It’s quite a bit larger than the usual driftwood. A tree uprooted in a storm perhaps, the job of sawing it into manageable logs begun but not finished. Washed into the river and taken out to sea. Most likely this river estuary but perhaps another, we’ll never know but eventually, as most things are, it’s washed back ashore to become driftwood on the beach..

Wonderful! The dark skies bring a real sense of gravitas to that driftwood. It certainly seems to have a story to tell!

Love seeing you back on the beach again. I often try to imagine where the driftwood has come from. I’ve seen whole trees with roots intact. I could be wrong, but it seems we get a whole lot more of it, but I imagine we may have more forests remaining here from whence they come.

Thank you Gunta. I suspect what you say is true. I’m sure Oregon has many, many more forested areas close to rivers and the ocean. It’s rare for me to come across driftwood. More often than not, it’s plastic junk thrown from ships and discarded nets and rope. I had to remove a part of an old car tyre before I started taking pictures on Friday.

Great shot, a beautiful expanse serves a perfect backdrop for this piece of mysterious wood. The dramatic sky creates such a good mood.

Thanks Randall. This shot was taken at first light. As with a sunset, the best colour comes after the sun has actually gone down, I think at dawn it is the same only in reverse of course. It’s why I always aim to be in situ at least an hour before sunrise, hence the very early starts. It’s always a pleasure though, once I’m out. :-)

Whatever its origin, you’ve created an epic drama in this moment. Gorgeous! I love the solidness of the wood in juxtaposition to the seeming fluidity of the sand and sky.

Thank you Vivian. I was thinking the same, the long exposure lending a sense of time passing while the tree/driftwood remains static, weathering for sure but not going anywhere anytime soon. :-)

Lovely image Adrian. I found a plastic duck washed up and caught in the rocks of a Cornish beach a couple of years ago. It was definitely not in the same mould as our usual ducks and I still wander where it came from. It’s now in my bathroom :)

Thank you Noeline. It is fun to speculate. I posted a picture a couple of years back and it was only while processing it that I noticed a plastic duck in the picture Lifeguards. I wonder if this one came from the same batch as yours. I seem to remember hearing that a couple of containers from a ship, floundering in a storm, had gone overboard and these ducks were turning up all over the world. I even seem to remember a map being shown depicting ocean currents and how these ducks were dispersing. Made a good story and it looks like we both came across one. I wish I’d picked it up now.

I have also wondered about pieces of driftwood as well, but have never captured an image involving driftwood that comes close to this one. Beautiful!

The driftwood makes a lovely subject for sure. I have a collection of small and wonderful driftwood pieces from the ocean. They make me think about where they might have originated.
