Driftwood..

I wonder what kind of journey this tree has had?  It’s quite a bit larger than the usual driftwood.  A tree uprooted in  a storm perhaps, the job of sawing it into manageable logs begun but not finished.  Washed into the river and taken out to sea. Most likely this river estuary but perhaps another, we’ll never know but eventually, as most things are, it’s washed back ashore to become driftwood on the beach..

  3. Wonderful! The dark skies bring a real sense of gravitas to that driftwood. It certainly seems to have a story to tell!

    • Thank you Sarah, much appreciated.

  4. Love seeing you back on the beach again. I often try to imagine where the driftwood has come from. I’ve seen whole trees with roots intact. I could be wrong, but it seems we get a whole lot more of it, but I imagine we may have more forests remaining here from whence they come.

    • Thank you Gunta. I suspect what you say is true. I’m sure Oregon has many, many more forested areas close to rivers and the ocean. It’s rare for me to come across driftwood. More often than not, it’s plastic junk thrown from ships and discarded nets and rope. I had to remove a part of an old car tyre before I started taking pictures on Friday.

  5. Wouldn’t you love to know where that big chuck of wood started out?!
    Tremendous scene!

    • Thank you Phil. It would be interesting to know the story!

  6. Great shot, a beautiful expanse serves a perfect backdrop for this piece of mysterious wood. The dramatic sky creates such a good mood.

    April 20, 2014 at 8:55 pm

    • Thanks Randall. This shot was taken at first light. As with a sunset, the best colour comes after the sun has actually gone down, I think at dawn it is the same only in reverse of course. It’s why I always aim to be in situ at least an hour before sunrise, hence the very early starts. It’s always a pleasure though, once I’m out. :-)

      • Same feeling…getting out of bed can be a chore unless you know what awaits, then it is easy as you will be rewarded! Cheers!

        April 29, 2014 at 1:51 am

      • Yep, the rewards can be well worth it. I don’t think I’ve been let down yet at that hour yet. Always a photograph! :-)

  8. Super! Great driftwood!. Have you seen it seems like a feet!

    April 20, 2014 at 9:34 pm

    • THank you Lou. It seems there are lots of shapes, faces and different things to be seen in the hunk of wood! :-)

  9. Great position en exposure, makes it a bit dramatic. Love it!

    April 20, 2014 at 10:33 pm

    • Thank you very much Ellen. I was able to get very close to the tree with the ultra-wide angle and still get everything in the shot.

  12. Whatever its origin, you’ve created an epic drama in this moment. Gorgeous! I love the solidness of the wood in juxtaposition to the seeming fluidity of the sand and sky.

    April 21, 2014 at 2:04 am

    • Thank you Vivian. I was thinking the same, the long exposure lending a sense of time passing while the tree/driftwood remains static, weathering for sure but not going anywhere anytime soon. :-)

  13. fantastic shoot and place!

  14. A most impressive piece of driftwood, Adrian. I can see quite a few faces lurking in it. :) Great photo.

    April 21, 2014 at 10:02 am

    • Thank you very much Sylvia. I too could see all sorts going on. The most obvious to me was a pig. :-)

      April 21, 2014 at 4:44 pm

      • Yes, but did you see the alligator, the elephant and the dog, not to mention that devilish little face right at the bottom just to the right of the middle?

      • I shall go back and take another look! :-D

  16. Lovely image Adrian. I found a plastic duck washed up and caught in the rocks of a Cornish beach a couple of years ago. It was definitely not in the same mould as our usual ducks and I still wander where it came from. It’s now in my bathroom :)

    April 21, 2014 at 2:31 pm

    • Thank you Noeline. It is fun to speculate. I posted a picture a couple of years back and it was only while processing it that I noticed a plastic duck in the picture Lifeguards. I wonder if this one came from the same batch as yours. I seem to remember hearing that a couple of containers from a ship, floundering in a storm, had gone overboard and these ducks were turning up all over the world. I even seem to remember a map being shown depicting ocean currents and how these ducks were dispersing. Made a good story and it looks like we both came across one. I wish I’d picked it up now.

  18. I have also wondered about pieces of driftwood as well, but have never captured an image involving driftwood that comes close to this one. Beautiful!

    • Thank you Elena, so much appreciated. :-)

  19. That sky is magnificent, and the driftwood adds some nice foreground interest.

    April 21, 2014 at 11:42 pm

    • Thank you. I thought perhaps the photo was a bit of a cliché but the photo was there, the sky superb, it had to be taken ;-)

Such a lovely feeling in this image ChillB with the dramatic radiating clouds and muted foreground .
Beached on the shoreline after a tumultuous journey … a final resting place for one … a breathing space for another ..

    • Thank you Poppy. It was a harmonious experience. I did feel connected and that always feels good. The photos do seem to reflect that.

  21. The driftwood makes a lovely subject for sure. I have a collection of small and wonderful driftwood pieces from the ocean. They make me think about where they might have originated.
A beautiful image, Adrian. Gosh, I must visit Cornwall sometime!
