The SUNY Oneonta men's soccer team got three goals from freshman
Cory Santangelo (Sayville/Sayville) within a 10-minute span en route to a 3-0 shutout of Fredonia this afternoon in SUNYAC men's action. The win for the Red Dragons extended its unbeaten streak to 16 games, as they are now 14-0-2 overall and 7-0-1 in the conference with one final SUNYAC game tomorrow at home versus Buffalo State.
Â
Oneonta completely controlled the action in this one, outshooting Fredonia (8-5-3/2-4-2 SUNYAC) including 9-0 in the opening half of play.
Â
The game remained scoreless into the 42
nd minute before Santangelo got started. His first goal was a redirect of a crossing pass from the right flank by junior
Colin Volpe (Commack/St. Anthony's). His eighth of the season would stand through the first 45 minutes.
Â
Less than two minutes into the second half, Santangelo made it 2-0 for Oneonta on a shot along the ground from the middle-right of the box. The assist went to sophomore
Hans Purtell (Johnson City/Johnson City), who crossed the ball from the right flank.
Â
Four minutes later Santangelo completed the natural hat-trick, this time scoring from in front on the goal about six yards out. Senior
Addison Straub (Manlius/Fayetteville Manlius) played the ball into the box where Santangelo was able to turn and send a shot that squeezed underneath the Fredonia keeper.
Â
Oneonta senior keeper
Vincent Pellegrino (Baldwin/Baldwin) made two saves and picked up his tenth win of the season and his eighth shutout.
