The Parties of the Summer

In today’s society, it seems that old-fashioned parties with cake and presents are being replaced with “roasting parties” on Twitter to roast celebrities for the rude things they have done. Hashtags such as #charlieputhisoverparty are used to represent the deterioration of the celebrity by his or her fandom. Even some similar hashtags such as #selenaendedjustinparty praise celebrities for ending another celebrity’s reputation.

The origins of how these hashtags date back to the Kanye West and Taylor Swift conflict. In February of 2016, Swift claimed she was assaulted and did not approve for West to release his new hit single, “Famous.” The lyrics involved West saying he made Swift famous.

Kim Kardashian West then posted a video of a phone call on Snapchat proving West asked for permission and Swift approved for the song to be released. Followers of Kardashian on Snapchat went ecstatic about the video and created #kimexposestaylorparty.

Ever since then, similar hashtags have began to take over the Twitter world.

One of them was the #mileycyrusisoverparty which began to arise in late August. It consisted of “roasting” Cyrus after Nicki Minaj called her out at the Video Music Awards in 2015.

Then came along the #charlieputhisoverparty which bashed Puth for his comment to a teenage girl on Instagram. However, this is comment is a rumor since it was never confirmed by Puth or the victim.

The #demilovatoisoverparty also sparked after Lovato posted a series of comments toward Mariah Carey. Lovato claimed Carey constantly disses people and treats others poorly.

The highlight of the summer was a hashtag involving Justin Bieber and Gomez. Apparently, Gomez commented four times on Bieber’s Instagram post of his seventeen-year-old girlfriend, claiming he was not loyal to his fandom.

Both Gomez and Bieber’s fandom were so shocked by Gomez’s comments that they rallied together and created the hashtag #selenaendedjustinparty.

Eventually, the hashtag was causing too much hate for Bieber and he deactivated his Instagram which resulted in the rise of #justinbieberisoverparty.

Celebrities today are some of the most prominent public figures in our society, and when they create drama, many people see that, especially the younger generations..

Celebrities can get caught up in the fame and wealth, making them feel invincible. However, it can be difficult to set a good example when one is under the constant watch of fans and media.
