Collectif Radiophonique Oboro
Wave Farm Artists-in-residence
The Wave Farm Residency Program is pleased to welcome Collectif Radiophonique Oboro Radio Collective (Montreal, Canada). Consisting of members of Oboro's board of directors, artistic committee and executive staff, the Collectif Radiophonique Oboro was formed in late 2014 for the purposes of researching, organizing, and mounting a major exhibition at Oboro on the broad theme of radio in Fall of 2016. Each of the group is a practicing artist and/or curator whose work has intersected with sound and the transmission arts. The group will spend time at Wave Farm researching and developing this exhibition.

Ed Bear
Wave Farm Artist-in-residence
The Wave Farm Residency Program is pleased to welcome Ed Bear (Brooklyn, NY). Bear's Radio Organ is an experimental array of 60 microradio transmitters is a massive multichannel synthesizer with 180 voices, transmitting to any and every station across the commercial FM spectrum. The “organ” will create a large physical space, where every station on 'your FM dial' is composed. During his residency, Bear will research the conceptual and technical precedence for this new instrument and installation. He will also compose, record, and begin mixing a set of long and short form pieces for the radio organ.
Turn Out or Tune In July 25, 8 p.m.
Turn out for a special event at Spotty Dog Books and Ale in Hudson, NY, or Tune In on Wave Farm Radio and WGXC 90.7-FM on Saturday July 25, when Ed Bear performs. Also performing are Samara Lubelski and Marcia Bassett.

Workshop
Wave Farm artist-in-residence Ed Bear leads this two-part workshop. Attendees may choose to attend Part I, Part II or both. Pre-registration is Required. Please email info [at] wavefarm.org to reserve your spot.
Part I: DIY Transmitter Hacking 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. (Materials Fee: $10) Modern life is surrounded with ubiquitous consumer electronics ripe with creative potential. We will repurpose a specific device designed to transmit audio to a car radio, the iTrip. Every generation of this device is specifically designed for each version of the iPod, leaving previous iterations of the iTrip obsolete and very cheap! The act of reprogramming and modifying the iTrip to work without an iPod is a unique and simple introduction to FM transmission and digital electronics with practical and creative motivations. This workshop requires no previous knowledge of programming, electronics, electromagnetism, etc. We will go through the reprogramming process, from breaking into the casing to reprogramming the chip. At the conclusion of this three hour workshop every participant will have one hacked iTrip transmitter.
Break: Lunch provided. 1 p.m. - 2 p.m.
Part II: Computer Music on the Radio 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. (Personal laptop required) Wait! There's a subtle secret! With a simple, parasitic circuit, the hacked iTrip can be connected to advanced audio programs and used as a digital synthesizer. Introducing the basics of digital sound synthesis and the industry standard MIDI (Musical Instrument Digital Interface) protocol, we will learn to write simple, interactive compositions that will play from a laptop or from the DIY radio transmitter without an attached computer. Because we are using the MIDI standard, the techniques covered in this workshop can be used with a variety of powerful musical instruments and programs (e.g. Abelton Live, Max/MSP, or MIDI enabled drum machines and sequencers). To save time participants of Part II can install the following tools on their personal laptop: Pure Data is creative media oriented visual programming environment. Hairless MIDI is a utility which allows MIDI programs to use the USB port on the DIY transmitter. ... but don't worry, both programs will be available at the workshop..

Newly installed at Wave Farm, Zach Poff's Pond Station transmits the hidden activity within this freshwater pond from dawn until sundown. The sound transmitted is broadcast to local listeners on Wave Farm Radio 1620-AM and Wave Farm's WGXC 90.7-FM, and streamed online to international audiences. In addition, Pond Station serves as a live, generative, natural instrument for Wave Farm resident artists who may remix and interpret these otherwise inaccessible environmental sounds in their own work. Later this year, Poff will return to Wave Farm and incorporate light sensor components as a next phase of the Pond Station project.

New York Media Arts Map v3
Designed for cultural organizations, artists, and the general public, the New York Media Arts Map features organizations with a deep commitment to media art and to technology as an art form.
The Map is a vital tool for identifying art and technology networks, services and opportunities throughout New York State, connecting us to each other and to essential information about Media Arts statewide.
The Map features a variety of resources including a funding calendar, consultant directory and convening archive. The Map also identifies contemporary media art activities, events and initiatives on a local and regional scale, representing a broad spectrum of independent media practice.
Newly re-launched in 2015 by current host organization Wave Farm, the Map is the result of a three year study on the sustainability and impact of independent media arts organizations in New York State. The Map was first conceptualized in 2008 by the New York State Council on the Arts Electronic Media and Film Program in collaboration with American Documentary/P.O.V. and the Experimental Television Center. Rhizome served as the first host organization from 2009-2013. In 2014, Wave Farm became the new Map’s host organization and project partner.

The Media Arts Assistance Fund (MAAF) addresses capacity and technology needs in three areas critical for New York State media arts organizations who face unique challenges in a field of rapid technology development: Organizational Development, Professional Development, and Convening (including conference attendance support.) Eligible organizations have missions specific to the media arts, and dedicate the majority of their programming to technology as an art form. Applications from multi-disciplinary organizations will be considered on a case-by- case basis, but are not a MAAF priority.

Wave Farm’s Media Arts Assistance Fund is a Regrant Partnership through the Electronic Media and Film Program, New York State Council on the Arts, with the support of Governor Andrew Cuomo and the New York State Legislature.
