John Heard has died at age 72.

The actor was found in a hotel and was pronounced dead on the scene Friday night, according to a news release from the Santa Clara County coroner’s office.

“The Medical Examiner performed and completed an autopsy this morning. The cause of death has not been determined, pending the Medical Examiner conducting further testing, including toxicology which can take anywhere from three to four weeks.”

The release also noted that there was no evidence of foul play.

The “Sopranos” actor, who began his career in the 1970s, had “minor back surgery” earlier this week and was recovering at the hotel in Palo Alto, Calif., TMZ reported.

“I can confirm that our officers responded with the Fire Department to a hotel in our city yesterday on a report of a person in need of medical aid,” a spokesperson for local police told People magazine. “The person was determined to be deceased. While still under investigation, the death is not considered suspicious at this time.”

Heard’s famed roles include Macaulay Culkin’s father in the “Home Alone” movies in the 1990s, a love interest in “Beaches” and the rival to Tom Hanks’ in “Big” which both hit the big screen in 1988.

His “Big” co-star, Elizabeth Perkins, tweeted her condolences.

“Rest peacefully, Mr. John Heard,” she wrote.  “You were the perfect foil, perfectly sly & a perfect gentleman. Many prayers to his family and children.”

The Emmy-nominated actor also played another dad in the 2004 comedy “White Chicks” alongside Marlon and Shawn Wayans.

“I had the pleasure of working with John Heard in #whitechicks he was a great guy,” Marlon wrote on Instagram. “Thank you for all your contributions to our beloved industry.”

Heard was married and divorced three times and had three children.

Reps for Heard did not immediately respond to request for comment.
