THE XO STORY. The new high-end family was named XO, which, according to Vision product manager Antti Guttorm (FFF’s CI, MCI and THCI), emphasises the uniqueness of the range. “Executive officer, eXtra Ordinary and Extra Old ( as in cognacs) are all worthy acronym definitions for these unique products,” he explains. “These meticulously designed and extensively tested Vision flagships are developed for traditional freshwater fly fishing.” HANDLES: In fly fishing, many anglers think that the rod blank does all the work, but cork grips play a much bigger role than you might believe. Cork grips are an important mechanism for improving the ability to control the rod. In addition to that, having a suitable cork grip in your rod can mean the difference between a enjoyable day of fly fishing, or a day after which your arm hurts really bad. Different cork grip styles fit your hand differently and provide a different feel. Many anglers have never even tried the most common styles of cork grips to find out which one suits them best. We have done it extensively and we decided upon using traditional Reverse Half Wells for the lighter models and Full Wells for the two heavier ones. We have been using those same models for years in our earlier rod series.

REEL SEAT: Our premium XO rods are finished with a light but sturdy precision machined aluminum up-locking reel seat with a Finnish Curly Birch wooden insert, which brings out our heritage from the forests of Finland. The decorative and extremely hard wood of curly birch has been used for centuries by local craftsmen. It is both a valued and valuable timber. Production of top quality curly birch timber requires expertise, and great attention to tree care and thinning.

GUIDES: The two most useful properties of titanium are corrosion resistance and the highest strength-to-density ratio of any metallic element. In its unalloyed condition, titanium is as strong as some steels, but less dense. Titanium can be alloyed with iron, aluminium, among other elements, to produce strong, lightweight alloys for many applications, also including the rod guides of fly fishing rods. We tried many products and got the best action and feeling from the patented single leg REC nickel titanium alloy snake guides and American Tackle Company solid titanium stripping guides. Both made in the USA. Solid Titanium alloy material is feather-light (Up to 64% lighter than like guides in stainless steel), 100% corrosion proof and rod-action flexibility translates into “high performance” that cannot be matched by any stainless material. Patented single leg REC nickel titanium alloy snake guides give minimal friction, higher line speed and longer casting. REC RECOIL guides are made from a special nickel titanium alloy with unique physical properties. RECOIL guides are made from an extremely hard but flexible “Shape Memory” alloy, which does not require plating, cannot corrode in any environment, and returns to its original shape after repeated deformations.

BLANKS: First we started with action samples from the best materials available. We found an action that we liked quite quickly but it wasn’t enough. We knew we could make it better. We started experimenting with different combinations of materials, components and manufacturing methods. All carbon rods utilise carbon fibres that are bonded together by an adhesive resin. A resin material incorporating silica nano spheres provides several benefits. We spent a lot of time and money to get our hands on the latest silica nano resin, which we then combined with different carbon fibre mixes. The final secret sauce that makes our new XO rods more durable and responsive than any other rod we’ve made so far was completed. It strenghtens the rod significantly by making it more resistant to compression. You’ll notice its advantages in the responsiveness and weight to strength ratio of the rod as well as in durability. We also tried a lot of different combinations of components from the rod guides to the reel seat. We tried sanded, un-sanded, painted and unpainted blanks. There was a hell of a lot of prototypes going through our hands and our hands were rough from casting them. We found the perfect combination. In the end we were left with a rod with a natural un-sanded and unpainted blank enforced with our new sauce of nano silica resin.

This later on changed to the real and final name Merisuola (Seasalt). First and foremost these rods are a result of our passion for saltwater fly fishing.

REEL SEAT: A double nut up-locking precision machined aluminum reel seat for secure and easy locking of your reel. Fighting butt size varies with each rod weight and has a target species branded on the end cap. Collect the whole series: bonefish, permit, and tarpon.

STORY: Tool DH rods have been a kind of an enigma since their introduction two years ago. Black matte blanks together with exceptional reel seats and thin EVA handles give these rods a unique stealthy look. So much so, that some more conservative anglers have avoided even testing these rods. Most of those who have tested have been really happy with the smooth and powerful performance of these rods. However, in order to make them more approachable for everybody we made Tool DH rods available with cork handles. In addition, we introduced three new models (currently only available with cork handles): 11’6’’ #5, 11’6’’ #7 and 11’6’’ #8. STORY: When we dropped the original XLB from our repertoire after year 2011, we got some angry calls and emails from customers all over the world. They came both from avid salmon anglers and from saltwater fanatics. They just couldn’t believe what we had done. All the remaining reels were acquired very quickly from our retailers and some even tried to find second-hand XLB reels to make sure that they have some spare reels for years to come. We told everybody that we are introducing some really cool reels, which could be used basically as replacements for the XLB. Well, looking back, we have to admit that we might have exaggerated a bit. There have been and still are some really good reels suitable for fighting some serious battles, but none of those reels is quite like the XLB. It is such a great feeling to know that you have a reel which will deliver every time in some of the most hostile environments known to fly fishermen. XLB’s formidable brake package is well enclosed and the heart is a solid carbon, stainless steel and Teflon disc trio. It operates smoothly even in those scary occasions when a fish pulls your rod down to a horizontal level and your backing is leaving in an ever increasing speed towards the horizon and the only thing that you can do is tighten your brake click by click and hope that it will stop before something bad happens. The line capacity of these reels will definitely give you some extra time before it happens. When loaded with our thin diameter Dacspun backing, you have a reel to fight a large Pacific sailfish or a colossal jungle tarpon. These reels balance nicely any proper size double hander, but they are just as well at home when attached to one of those ten or twelve+ weight single hand rods needed to fight any saltwater leviathans. Needless to say the capacity should be sufficient for every salmon angler even when using the longest Spey lines available.

REMARKS:

STORY: A great salmon reel doesn’t have to be as light as a feather. When used with a long double hand rod, a reel is not just a fly line storage or a brake provider in your fishing set, but also very much a balancing element. The initial brake design was from our highly popular and proven GT reel. The outlook of the reel follows closely classical salmon reel design principles with only few holes on the handle side of the reel to provide some amount of ventilation for fly line and backing after long fishing hours. We wanted to have a full rim for the reel in order to fully eliminate those unfortunate occasions when a thin running line gets jammed between the frame and the spool. The classical color of the reel is an outcome of anodizing the used high quality aluminum. The final touch in our quest for old-school atmosphere comes in the form of absolute kick ass brake sound. Now available also in black.

STORY: Many countries have some special flies, which have become legends, sometimes even outside the country of origin. In order to honor two extremely popular Finnish fly patterns, called Nalle Puh and Tinseli, Vision decided to introduce two special custom-made GT reels (Limited Edition), which are decorated with pictures of these flies. When fishing from a float tube, it is wise to use those fly lines, which are easy to cast. 37

XO High-floating XO is our most advanced fly line. It has our new STD™ taper making it one of the easiest casting all round fly lines. This provides outstanding control when shooting as well as carrying a long line out at all distances. The STD™ taper also enables roll casts and mends like classic DT line. XO has a super slick and strong HiFlo™ coating. It also features varying hardness coatings in different parts of the line; the head being softer allowing you to push arrow shaped tight loops and the running line being harder for carrying extra-long overhangs and ultimate shootability. Due to XO's long rear taper and the fact that the line casts well no matter how much head is out we felt that the line doesn't have to be two-toned. MERISUOLA Saltwater fly fishing is becoming more and more popular in Europe. Vision has already been offering specially designed tackle for saltwater fanatics for years. Two years ago we decided to put some extra efforts into this field and started the Project Merisuola (Sea salt). The idea was to provide premium tools for devoted saltwater fly fishermen. In the first phase we are introducing Merisuola fly rods and fly lines, which were designed simultaneously to complete each other. The harsh saltwater environment and big, strong and fast fish is a combination, which sets some hard limits especially for fly lines. For that reason, we have spent numerous hours testing and re-designing our Merisuola fly lines before we were confident that the lines were ready for the challenge.

TANE Tane fly line is available both as a traditional weight forward (WF) line with a 11m head and as a double taper (DT) line. The new coating used in this line is the result of long and extensive testing in Finland and beyond. This slightly thinner than normal WF line has a carefully designed taper that suits most fishing situations giving you nice presentation whether you are overhead casting or spey casting. Tane has a core with a 22% stretch for those delicate situations where thin tippets are needed. Both WF and DT lines have loops on both ends of the line. Total length 30m. ULTRA LIGHT NYMPH Our new fly line is designed for nymph fishing, especially for Polish/Czech/French Nymph techniques. Because of the very thin diameter (only 0.58mm) and new slippery coating the casting is easy. Softness and lack of fly line memory guarantee that you won't miss even the smoothest bite! On both sides of the fly line there are small smooth loops to for attaching the leader and backing. This light beige line was specially designed to meet European standards of competition (minimum diameter 0.55 mm) and the development and design was done together with one of the greatest competition anglers in the world, Pablo Castro Pinos from Spain. KUST SH(shooting head) The original Kust line has a 10 metre head and 20 metres of floating running line. The line has a slick and supple coating which remains memory free even in cold conditions. The slickness is achieved by adding Teflon® particles to the coating and this way the slickness doesn’t wear off either. The low stretch core helps you to feel the takes and it also transfers casting energy far more efficiently than traditional cores. The line is perfect for most situations a coastal angler will face while hunting the elusive seatrout. However, in certain locations, really long casts are required on a regular basis. Casting a 30 metre long Kust line fully out is a job well-done, but more importantly, long casts are sometimes needed to be performed very fast if a faraway school of seatrout is moving fast. There is no time for several false casts. That is the main reason why we are introducing two Kust shooting heads (SH): a clear floater and a light-olive SloMo. When combined with a thin running line, for example our Catapult Flat shooter, the angler gets additional benefit as the running line has much smaller surface area for wave/current disturbances when compared to the integrated running line used in our full length Kust lines. This provides better control of the fly and enables easier detection of subtle takes. The ready-made loops make it easy to attach the shooting head to the leader and to the running line.

BIG DADDY Big Daddy is a line which is designed for both big and air resistant flies. It has a short, 8.5 meters head with very aggressive front taper giving you really good turnover of bulky flies. The low stretch core, combined with super slick grooved coating with built-in Teflon, transfers the casting energy in the best possible way and gives a clear advantage hooking hard headed fish firmly even at long distances. Vibe 85 has an 8.5 meter long head. The head’s weight is clearly marked in grams and grains for easy comparison and they have also suggestion for ideal rod rating. The 85 is heavier compared to AFTM standard. Therefore, for example line which is suggested for rods 5–6, performs well in stiffer and more powerful #5 weight rods or softer #6 weight rods. ACE SHOOTING HEADS | Technology & Products The well-known ACE – shooting heads are now even better. New heads have all the necessary features like super slim and strong loops on both ends, printing on the loops telling which end attach to running line and the weight & the sinking/floating speed of head. They are also built over supersensitive low stretch core so you’ll feel even the lightest take.

The biggest and most radical step over the other shooting heads is our Sliding Density™ construction of the sinking heads. Instead of making the line with two or even three different density materials we’ve made these lines with continuous change of the density. So for example our Inter to Sink 3 head’s density changes gradually from intermediate to Sink 3. This way we have made a line which doesn’t have ANY hinging effect during the cast. It flies in a really nice and controlled loop offering extremely good energy transform turning over even really big and heavy flies. With the Sliding Density™ construction together with the new Carrot taper we’ve been able to make the easiest casting sinking heads on the market, period.

The other thing with these heads is the Down To Earth colours. We felt that the lines should blend to the colours of the riverbed. So the sinking lines’ colours are chosen to be brownish & greenish because that’s what the stones and the bottom of the rivers often are. The Floating Carrot with its HiFlo™ - coating rides very high on the surface and with carrot orange colour it is very easy to see and follow exactly where your fly is.The Clear Float has a different approach. It is fully transparent so it minimizes the shadow it casts to the bottom. Shortly, you’ll spook less and hook more. It floats lower than the Carrot, just about on the surface, so the surface disturbance during the swing is minimal. Lower floating adds also friction when casting so it loads your rod easier. 46

Clear Float  Clear low float coating on a clear monofilament core.  The low float coating reduces the surface disturbance when you’re swinging the fly. ACE SKAGIT | Intermediate A floating head is without any question the number one choice for Skagit fishing. It is ridiculously easy to use and it will get the job done in most of the cases. In some places, however, the surface flow is so strong or complex that it will make the sinking of the fly to the killing zone very difficult or the floating head drags the fly too fast when you want to present it slowly. To solve these problems, you need to get the large diameter head under the surface and away from the strongest current layer. Unlike some of our distinguished colleagues in the industry, we feel that leaving a part of the head on the surface is not the right way to proceed and thus our head is fully intermediate. This comes handy especially on some of the Scandinavian rivers which can be truly fast moving and occasionally pretty deep. We might suffer a bit in the maneuverability of the head but we consider that a small price to pay when we can offer our fly just as slowly as we like in diverse conditions. Code

The SpaceFluoro product family has a wide range of diametres suitable for competition anglers, streamer fanatics and saltwater/pike bums for both fresh and saltwater environments. Prisma is the fluorocarbon in our range. It has great knot strength and it is easy to tie, thanks to a special coating and slightly bigger stretch. Nano mono tippet material performs best when you need to use small flies with delicate presentation. It has superior knot strength and it is very easy to tie. It has more stretch than our other tippet materials so it acts also like a shock absorber, a great feature when using thin tippets. ULTRASONIC SEAM TECHNOLOGY. Scout waders are made with our Ultrasonic technology seams, meaning that there’s no stitch hole in the seams. We have welded two fabrics into one, making the seam itself waterproof. This weld is then double taped with our own E-tape to give it strength in extreme conditions. You know, sometimes you need run and jump after hooking the fish of your lifetime. From the usability point of view, the main differences between traditional and ultrasonic seamed waders, are the flat seams. There is actually no noticeable difference between the plain fabrics and the seam. Only the additional water-

proof inside tape will create a small increase to the thickness. This is quite the contrary to normal seams in waders, where you have a bulky seam with three (3) layers of fabrics plus the additional inside tape(s). In numbers, we can state that an ultrasonic welded seam is always at least 67% percent thinner when compared to normal seams. The bulkiness of a traditional seam causes also a serious non-usability related problem; the big difference in thickness between the plain fabrics and the seam creates a sort of a hinge (joint), which increases considerably the level of abrasion.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE CORRECT SIZE? It is important to have the right size of waders to get their maximum performance. For example, if your waders are too small it will stress the seams too much and create a great risk of leakage. The first step in choosing is to find out your type of waders. We have grouped them for Standard, King, Long and Short sizes. If you are of average build, start with Standard sizes. For slimmer and taller builds try Long and for heavier builds use King sizes.

Subzero waders are designed for maximum warmth. They are manufactured from hardwearing, high quality 5mm. neoprene rubber that is very supple, lightweight and flexible. STORY: Hopper wading boots are very light in weight and remind you more of the hiking shoes. They are made out of strong nylon material and reenforced with rubber bumper. The shoe opens up wide so it is very easy to put on and the nylon lace loops hold the laces while you tighten them up. High design with neoprene cushioning maximizes the comfort and support. For year 2016 we introduced improved Hopper wading boots with our revolutionary Gummi rubber soles. We raised one-piece rubber bumper around the shoe and the Gummi sole with raised front is stitched through to secure it. For 2017 we’ll do the stitching for the felt sole as well.

STORY: In 2013 we presented wading boots called Loikka. They were the outcome of 15 years of evolution – our dream boots. The foundation of these fully synthetic boots lies on the highly popular Mako boots, but they include several essential improvements. The front part of the boot is now well protected by a special “rubber shield“. The number and positioning of always vulnerable seams is optimized. The ankle part gives a proper support and is lined with comfortable neoprene. Its design is based on our ultracomfortable Hopper wading boots. This means that the boot is extremely easy to put on and take off. Shoe laces go through nylon loops on the lower part and reduce thus the number of metallic staples, which can in worst case wear the laces and rust when used in saltwater conditions. Loops enable fast and easy tightening of laces with less energy. However, having stated all the above, the biggest improvement of them all, can be found from the sole part of these boots. After a long period of development and testing, we were able to introduce a brand new rubber sole, called GUMMI. This material is clearly softer and stickier than most of the soles available. As a result we now have a material, which is providing a unique level of traction. To make sure that the sole stays glued to the bottom of the boot, we extended the sole to cover the front part of the shoe giving thus good protecting for toes. This way we can prevent the way too common phenomena, where something sharp goes between the sole and the boot and eventually causes sole separation. The final touch in our pursuit for superior traction is achieved by including well tested and proven low profile tungsten studs to the sole. Loikka wading boots are naturally also available without the studs and with a felt sole, These boots are meant to be used in the hardest imaginable conditions. You just can’t abuse them. Go and give your best shot.

This is a great tube for the destination angler who wants to carry several rods in one tube. Finnish Society for Stream Conservation - VIRHO

The first donation goes to Finland and more precisely to a stream conservation society VIRHO operating actively for example all around the Vision Headquarters located in Hyvinkää some 50km from capital Helsinki. The upper reaches of River Vantaa are situated just few kilometers from the HQ and the well-being of that particular native sea-run brown trout stock is naturally very important to everybody working for the company - regardless whether they are fly fishermen or not.

Virho has restored a great number of trout and salmon spawning and living habitats in streams since 1990. The work has mostly been done delicately by hand and is based on voluntary work. In addition, Virho has constructed several fish passages. River Vantaa which streams through Helsinki is an excellent example of this successful work. FINNISH ALLIANCE TO SAVE FRESH WATER RESOURCES Starting from season 2017 two Finnish companies, Vision Group and Pure Waste Textiles will start co-operating in the spirit of saving natural resources and especially our endangered wild salmon and trout stocks. developed a global textile recycling and manufacturing supply chain. They source textile waste on a global scale and recycle it into fabrics and yarns. Because their products are made entirely out of discarded waste they can guarantee their ecological sustainability, a value that guides all of their work. For instance, using recycled cotton saves 11,000 litres of water per kilogram, which would otherwise be required to produce the water intensive cotton crops. In addition to the ecological sustainability of their products, their quality is also of crucial importance to the company. By monitoring in detail their source materials and the recycling process they are able to ensure that the quality of their products fulfills all the standards required by their clients and end-customers.

TAPE MEASURES

Measure your trophy. These plastic (robust and easy to keep clean) measuring tapes are capable of measuring up to 138cm, which should be enough for most of us. PIKE FLY HOOKS

This family consists of three types of fly boxes: Slim, Fit and Tube. The boxes are decorated with a special fish camo print. Slim boxes are extremely thin and you can squeeze several inside a normal vest pocket. Slim series includes a special box with a magnetic bottom for preventing the flies/hooks for dropping out. Fit series boxes are slightly thicker, but still slim when compared to traditional fly boxes. The unique family is completed with a duo of tube fly boxes.

The interest towards fly fishing for non-salmonids species in Europe has increased considerably during the last decade or so and the main focus has clearly been on the northern pike. Vision has been extremely active in this field and obtained an excellent position on these constantly growing markets with its pike related product families aptly named as Big Daddy and Big Mama. For season 2017, we will further complement our pike related repertoire and introduce two special hooks for targeting those wild toothy critters of the North. In order to get it right from the start, we did this in collaboration with one of the best fly hook companies there is, Partridge of Redditch. When fishing for a big pike with a hard mouth you need a special hook. It needs to be strong and extremely sharp. In order to tie really big and bulky flies when needed, the hook needs to have a proper gap. When fishing in brackish water (the Baltic Sea) you need to consider corrosion related issues as well. As releasing trophy-size pikes is recommendable for various reasons, having a micro-size barb in your hook is not only good for penetration but for releasing or de-barbing as well. To bear all the above in mind, it was easy to conclude that Partridge of Redditch had the knowledge and the designs to implement our vision. As a result we are very happy and very proud to introduce the solid green-colored Big Daddy and the extra-strong red-colored Big Mama hooks especially for all of us who love to fish for the fast-and-furious northern pike.
