Volleyball Shuts Down Panhandle in Straight Sets

Box Score UTPB volleyball dropped the first point in each set Saturday afternoon, but the Falcons needed little time to shut down Oklahoma Panhandle State for a 25-15, 25-15, 25-16 victory in straight sets in Heartland Conference action in Odessa.

Morgann Davis led the Falcon attack for the fourth time in six matches, recording 12 kills on 26 attempts for a match-high .423 hitting percentage.

UTPB came back from a 4-0 deficit to start off the day in the first set to take a 9-6 lead. The Falcons later scored nine straight points to turn around a 13-12 OPSU lead into a commanding 21-13 advantage. The Falcons scored four of the last five points in the first set to win the first 25-15.

The second set featured more big runs for UTPB including an early five-point streak for a 6-2 lead capped by a pair of kills from Ryley Carman and another from Rachel Dixon. The Falcons pieced together five straight points midway through the set to breakaway 17-11 and scored the final three points of the second set on a Caitlyn Guajardo kill, ace by Taylor Harmon and a block by Davis and Guajardo for their second straight 25-15 set win.

Streaks continued in the third for the home team, including five in a rown for a 5-1 lead early on. Five kills in six points, three by Hannah Rebb and one each from Davis and Puava Tulau helped the Falcons out to a 17-7 lead, and UTPB held off the Aggies to score the match win with a 25-16 third set win.

Carman finished the match in double-digits as well for UTPB, hitting .381 on the day with 10 kills. Taylor Harmon paced the team with 26 digs and Ariana Gallardo and Whitney Wofford split setting duties with 17 and 15 assists each.

The Falcons close out their current homestand early next week, hosting Angelo State Tuesday night at 7 p.m.
