The historic steam locomotive, The Flying Scotsman, will visit Carlisle's Citadel Station today, it has been confirmed.

It had been hoped that the engine would visit the city last month, but the event was cancelled just a few days before due to problems with its brakes.

The Winter Cumbrian Mountain Express train is set to leave London Euston railway station at 7.09am (Saturday), travelling up the West Coast Main Line. It will be pulled by diesel engines to Carnforth, where it will be joined by the Flying Scotsman locomotive and is set to arrive in Carlisle at 12.41pm.

The train had been due to leave Citadel Station and travel down the Carlisle to Settle line. However as of this afternoon, the return route, which would take in the Settle to Carlisle line, had yet to be confirmed as it is currently closed due to a landslip.

Martin Frobisher, route managing director for Network Rail, said: "The safety of train passengers and railway staff is paramount and is the reason behind this decision.

"Consistent high levels of rainfall have saturated the ground and caused this slip, which has affected the stability of the railway through the area.

"Our aerial footage highlighted the scale of ground movement which has led us to close the line as a precaution while we confirm the next steps to tackle this issue. We do know extensive repairs will be needed to fix this."
