BYW concludes successful winter season!

To coincide with a record snow fall for the City of Boston this year (and perhaps still counting!), Boston Youth Wrestling matched the weather's intensity with a record winter season. On and off the mat, our youth wrestlers exemplified the type of self-confidence, discipline, hard work, and perseverance that our coaches teach and model each day in practice and in competitions.

Read below for some of the highlights from these last four months:

  • BYW brought its largest youth team to the MYWA State Youth Tournament Series, qualifying 15 wrestlers for the Grades 7-8 Division, and another 5 wrestlers for the Grades 5-6 Division. This far and away eclipses the 12 we brought to the State Championships in 2014, and the 10 qualified in 2013. The team was made of up students from: the Blue Hill Boys & Girls Club, Boston Latin School, Eliot K-8 School, and the Lilla G. Frederick Middle School. As a team, Boston finished in 21st place (out of 70 teams). In total, 9 wrestlers finished the day with at least one win, and 4 wrestlers finished the day with two or more wins.
  • Of the 20 wrestlers that competed at both State tournaments, 3 wrestlers qualified for the Youth New England Championships held on March 14-15 at Reading High School. This was a new record, eclipsing the previous mark of 2 qualified wrestlers for this prestigious regional tournament (in BYW's first full season in winter 2012-13). All three wrestlers competed admirably and placed in the top 6 in their respective weight classes (earning medals for their placements). Please join me in congratulating these young men!
    • Gianni Cannady (Blue Hill Boys & Girls Club) 6th grade, 195 lbs - 3rd place
    • Carlos Goncalves (Frederick Middle School) 8th grade, 260 lbs - 4th place
    • Christian Luti (Eliot K-8 School) 8th grade, 260 lbs - 6th place
  • BYW is pleased to announce the hiring of Bior Guigni as Head Girls Wrestling Coach! We want to thank the Dicks Sporting Goods Foundation and the Sports Matter Grant for their support of our newest all-girls wrestling program (beginning on April 8th).
  • BYW was awarded a 2015 Grant from the Lenny Zakim Fund. We are thankful for their donors and executive team for selecting us as an award recipient!
  • On February 20th, BYW was honored by the Harvard University Wrestling program before their final home meet versus Columbia University. Pre-match, our students were treated to a personalized wrestling clinic taught by current Harvard wrestlers. Read about the whole day here.
  • We had several school-based programs start their seasons in January/Feburary/March including: Eliot, Dever-McCormack, Irving, and a combined Excel Academy program (East Boston and Orient Heights campuses). In addition, BYW will be welcoming the addition of the Curley K-8 School and the Mildred Avenue K-8 School in April. If you attend any of those school sites, please contact the team's respective coaches. Information can be found our team contact pages.

Boston wrestling had a tremendously successful winter season, and our wrestlers are ready to continue their hard work on the mat and in the classroom. If you know of a wrestler interested in wrestling this spring, please share the Parent Authorization Form and Spring Information Flyer with them. Thank you for your continued generous support!

Sincerely,
José E. Valenzuela, President / Founder
