Autumn at Jekka's Herb Farm

Thank you to everyone who visited at our last Open Day. We are now beginning to put the Herbetum to bed for the winter, cutting back the Asteraceae and Lamiaceae families, and have started propagating for next year.

Pruning promotes new growth allowing a late Autumn or Winter harvest and also protects from gales and heavy rain. Jekka's top tip for cutting back the Lamiaceae family is to 'always stay within the green'.

French Tarragon (Artemisia Dracunculus) is also cut back now to 4 - 5cm above the ground this will help to protect new growth in spring. The harvested leaves are used to make butters or vinegar that we demonstrate in our 'How to use Herbs' Master Class.

It is the perfect time for propagation. Currently on our propagation bench are thyme and rosemary from the summer cut back. We take 5cm cuttings and grow them in plug trays until rooted.
Autumn is also the time for sowing seeds that require stratification (i.e. exposure to winter conditions). These seeds include Angelica (photographed below), Sweet Cicely and Sea Kale.
Jekka's Master Classes 2018

To learn more about propagation, sowing from seeds, pruning and using herbs we run a number of different Master Classes. We will be launching our 2018 Master Classes in early October.
