Charges: Armed robbery, Surfers Paradise

Gold Coast Criminal Investigation Branch have charged a Redbank Plains man following an armed robbery this morning at Surfers Paradise.

A woman was walking along Garfield Terrace at around 12.50am when it will be alleged that she was approached by a man who asked if he could use her phone.

After making a call, the man walked away only to approach her again a short while later and asked to use her phone a second time.

She gave him the phone and he allegedly produced what appeared to be a handgun and made demands for her handbag. She complied and he fled on-foot along Northcliffe Terrace.

At around 2.10am police located the man on Cypress Terrace where it will be further alleged that he was in possession of a replica handgun and a knife.

The 23-year-old Redbank Plains man has been charged with one count each of armed robbery and possession of a knife in a public place.  He will appear in the Southport Magistrates Court this morning.
