Story
My cousion's daughter Ghina Ahmad Wadi was on her way to buy medicine for her mum on 2 August in the besieged town of Madaya, Syria, when she was hit by a sniper at a government checkpoint.
The shot shattered her leg, leaving her in almost constant, excruciating pain. Trapped in Madaya for 10 days by milita forces working for the Syrian government , I launched a social media campgian to get her evacuated. Amnesty lauched an urgent appeal and appeal. UNHCR, MSF and Save the Children all worked tirelessly into negotiatating her release.
More than 34,000 people used the hashtag #SaveGhina and she was eventually let go for urgent surgery in Damascus on 13 August 2016.
Ghina, her mum and younger sister arrived safely at the Al-Mouwasat University Hospital in Damascus. Ghina was made comfortable with pain killers right away and on 15 August Ghina underwent a three-hour operation.
She had rods placed in her leg where the bone was too shattered to heal. Her operation went well and Ghina will now need lots of physio, medicine and frequent evaluation so that she can walk again.
Ghina, her mum, and sister will need to stay in Damascus until Ghina's treatment is complete. The money will go directly to Ghina's mum who is going to spend most of it covering medical fees for Ghina. The medical fees include physio treatment, medicine and consultant fees. If we raise enough money the family will want to transfer Ghina to a private hospital in Damascus, or try and get her to Lebanon for better access specialists and to physio treatment.
Please help us in raising money for Ghina - to get back on her feet again!
Thank you,
Fadah Jassem

8 years agoThere's not long now before the JustGiving page for Ghina ends so I'd like to send my personal thanks and gratitude to all our wonderful friends, friends of friends and Anonymous donors. Ghina was discharged from the hospital 4 days ago. She was moved by the Red Crescent to a camp for displaced and orphaned children called SOS in Saboura (Damascus suburb). Ghina's ongoing treatment will be lengthy and the rod should be out soon. The centre where Ghina is with her mum and sister is only a temporary solution. I'll update you all again soon!
