PHOENIXVILLE, PA- The women's soccer team hosted the Lady Lions of Penn State Beaver in their final regular season match of the year. The Lady Patriots held a one point lead, 2-1, going into the half and held strong to earn a final season victory, 4-3!
The Lady Lions came out of the gate first, recording a goal at 13:19 from Jessica Spina off of a free kick. Five minutes later, at 18:15,
Kelsey Morrison answered the Lady Lions' goal with one of her own. Breaking free of the visitor's defense, Morrison raced her way up the field and fired at the goal. The ball hit the cross bar and shot back into the goal to tie the game, 1-1. Morrison didn't stop there though as ten minutes later she received a pass from
Caitlin LaFountain to etch another point on the board for the Patriots. The women led 2-1 going into halftime.
As the second verse got underway, the Lady Lions came out firing once again. At 49:00, Brittany Langevin tied the game at 2-2 with goal. Valley Forge repeatedly attacked the Lions, searching for a goal to regain the lead but was turned away every time. Next to score and take the lead would be the visitors as Jessica Spina recorded her second goal of the game and put the Lady Lions up, 3-2. Fired up, Lady Patriot
Caitlin LaFountain crashed the Lion's defense and fired a shot into the upper left 90 to tie the game up once again, 3-3, at 64:55.
It appeared the game would go into overtime as neither team managed to pull away. Finally, top shooter
Kelsey Morrison found the hole in the Lion's defense and dashed up the side of the field toward the Lion's goal. With only seconds to spare, Morrison fired at the goalkeeper. Everyone held their breath as the ball slipped right over the goalie's hands, under the crossbar and into the net for the game winning goal! The Lady Patriots celebrated their 4-3 last second victory over Penn State Beaver.
Kelsey Morrison was unstoppable with 13 shots, eight shots on goal and three goals.
Caitlin LaFountain had nine shots, seven shots on goal, one goal and one assist.
The team out-shot the Lady Lions, 30 to 13.
The team finishes the regular season, 2-16.
The Lady Patriots head to Baptist Bible College, Saturday, October 25, to play in the NCCAA II East Region Finals. The game is set for 12PM.
