Runner-up finish earns OC’s Johnston 8th NCCAA weekly award

OC junior Sam Johnston has been named as the NCCAA student-athlete of the week for the eighth time.
OKLAHOMA CITY (March 3, 2015) – The latest of Sam Johnston's impressive run of finishes during his junior season has landed the Oklahoma Christian golfer another national award.

Johnston was named Tuesday as the National Christian College Athletic Association student-athlete of the week, the day after his runner-up finish in the Las Vegas Desert Classic at Paiute Golf Club.

It's the fourth time this academic year and the eighth time overall that the San Diego product has taken the NCCAA honor. He's received it after both of the Eagles' tournaments this spring.

In Las Vegas, Johnston shot rounds of 2-under-par 70 and 74 to finish at even-par for the tournament, overcoming chilly and windy conditions on the desert course.

He helped OC finish second in the team race in a field full of quality NCAA Division II and III teams. Johnston has finished in the top 10 in his last six tournaments, a run that includes two wins and two runner-up finishes.

Johnston is a three-time NCCAA All-America selection and a two-time NCAA Division II All-America pick.
