Cape Town - A car skidded on a wet road, veered into a pole and split in half, killing three people on Sunday night. The jaws of life had to be used to retrieve two of the bodies, while a third was flung from the vehicle.
This was just the latest in a series of crashes over the weekend that saw at least 14 people die and several people badly injured on Cape roads. But it was Cape Town that bore the brunt of the carnage with several horrific accidents.
Western Cape traffic chief Kenny Africa said incidents took place in Lentegeur, Table View, Worcester, Plettenberg Bay, Kraaifontein, Strand and Oudtshoorn.
Africa said on Sunday night a car collided with a camera pole, killing two passengers and the driver, and a pedestrian was hit and killed by a car that then sped off up Robert Sobukhwe Road.
Africa said motorists needed to change their attitudes and respect each other on the roads. “We are doing our part as traffic officials to end road fatalities, but motorists need to come to the party too. They need to respect each other and stop taking chances on the roads because people lose their lives as a result.”
ER24 spokesman Pieter Rossouw said three people were killed in the collision with the pole on the N2 close to the Macassar off-ramp on Sunday night.
The collision occurred around midnight and involved only one vehicle. The road was wet and the vehicle allegedly lost control at a slight bend.
President Jacob Zuma on Sunday called for motorists to be more cautious after dozens of people lost their lives in accidents across the country in the past few days.
