WYOMING - The One Wyoming 1 on 1 mentoring program recently celebrated the end of another successful school year.

Mentors and mentees, who are paired and spend one hour a week together through the program, held a celebration ceremony earlier this month at the Wyoming branch of the Kent District Library, 3350 Michael Ave. SW. The program had 435 mentors this school year.

The mentors work with kindergarten through 12th-grade students in Godwin Heights, Godfrey Lee, Kelloggsville, Wyoming and Vanguard Charter Academy schools.

Jack Ponstine, who coordinates the program and serves as a mentor, said the organization hopes to grow by 200 mentors each year, reaching about 1,100 mentors by 2018.

In the program, a mentor fills the role of a supporting adult to student, such as attending the child's sporting or music activities, offering school and resume guidance or providing a listening ear.
