The continent of Africa will experience an annular eclipse of the Sun on September 1, 2016. This is when the apparent diameter of the Moon is smaller than the diameter of the Sun. Because of this, sunlight can be seen surrounding the disk of the Moon. Daylight will still occur; thus, no darkness as you would see during a total solar eclipse. Most of Africa will see a partial eclipse of the Sun. A very small area of South America, at the Atlantic coast, will see a partial eclipse of the Sun soon after sunrise, but for only a brief period of time.
