Clermont, Fla.- The Georgian Court University softball squad, continues to seek its first taste of victory in 2015 as the Lions dropped two heartbreaking defeats Tuesday afternoon vs. Cedarville University and St. Anselm College.
GAME ONEIn what proved to be a see-saw affair over the first two innings of action, Cedarville University (2-6) and the Lions (0-6) were knotted at 6-6 headed into the third frame. The score would stay locked until the bottom of the fifth when the Yellow Jackets plated two runs on three hits to secure the lead and the eventual 8-6 triumph.
Cedarville's
Cece Gummel (Sr.-Cedarville, Ohio) earned the win out of the bullpen, throwing five shutout innings (4 hits, BB, 3 K). GCU's Katie Sorochka (0-2) was saddled with the defeat in the complete-game effort, permitting eight runs (3 ER) on nine hits and two walks.
GCU's
Alycia Marsello (2-for-4) collected a game-best four RBI in the setback while
Dara Schroeder (3-4, R) and
Stefanie Aplin (3-for-3, R) each connected for three hits apiece in the contest.
GAME TWOIt was more of the same back-and-forth drama in the nightcap vs. Saint Anselm College (2-1) as Georgian Court jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of second after Schroeder laid down a bases-loaded clearing bunt single that was ultimately thrown away by the Hawks' first baseman.
The lead would be short-lived as Saint Anslem countered with a three-spot of its own on four hits in the top of the third. An infield hit by
Alyssa Paradiso brought home
Courtney Tylutki after the Lions' starting pitcher commenced the bottom of the fourth with a double down the right-field line, giving GCU a slim 4-3 advantage.
Unfortunately, that would be the end of the line for GCU as Saint Anselm scored a pair of runs in both the fifth and sixth to go ahead 7-4. A
JoLei Buonanno triple and Marsello sacrifice fly pulled the Lions to within two and provided a glimpse of hope for a Georgian Court comeback in the bottom of the seventh, but that would be as close as they would inch.
Tayla Trask (Sr.-Lincoln, Me.) was the winning pitcher for St. Anselm, permitting four runs (2 ER) over six innings. Tylutki (0-4) took the loss for GCU after allowing five runs (3 ER) over 4.2 innings of action.
Georgian Court is off Wednesday before returning to the diamond on Thursday with games vs. Gannon University (11:00 a.m.) and Assumption College (3:00 p.m.).
