England 28-9 Samoa: how the players at Twickenham rated

This article is more than 9 years old
George Ford gave England a spark at fly-half but Owen Farrell fared less well after his move to the centres

15 Mike Brown 7/10

He survived a tough early physical onslaught to play a key role in May’s tries. In the difficult conditions the full-back was always a potent threat and took his sixth international try smartly.

14 Anthony Watson 6/10

Made one or two neat breaks and looked classy when taking George Ford’s cross-kick and unselfishly off-loading to Brown. The Bath man also defended manfully.

13 Brad Barritt 5/10

Barritt shored up the defence with his Saracens club-mate Owen Farrell but the Sarries’ partnership was not a success and Manu Tuilagi’s return from injury can’t come too soon for England.

12 Owen Farrell 5/10

The experiment of playing the fly-half in the centre was a qualified success. While his old school friend George Ford earned the plaudits he was efficient but looked less than happy in new role.

11 Jonny May 7/10

Followed that wonder try against the All Blacks with explosive break for another after just returning to the field following a blood injury and added a second straightforward effort.

10 George Ford 8/10

England’s first evening Twickenham international saw the young pretender step out of the shadows to give the side a creative spark. Did that and kicked with great assurance.

9 Ben Youngs 7/10

Has waited patiently for his chance to return and did enough to keep his starting place against the Wallabies next weekend. Box-kicked more effectively than out-of-sorts Danny Care.

1 Joe Marler 7/10

The Harlequins captain will come under pressure for his place when Alex Corbisiero returns from injury but meanwhile gave no ground to Samoa’s strongman Census Johnston.

2 Rob Webber 6/10

The hooker got his chance thanks to the ill-discipline of Dylan Hartley and scrummaged powerfully. Webber was unspectacular but did enough to keep his place against the Wallabies.

REPLACEMENTS: Matt Mullan (for Marler 59) Scrummaged strongly 6; Dylan Hartley (for Webber 70) No time to make impression on 60th cap 5; Kieran Brookes (for Wilson 59) Continues improvement 6; George Kruis (for Lawes 53) Good dynamic cameo again 6; Tom Wood (for Haskell 67) Little time to make impact 5; Richard Wigglesworth (for Youngs 63) Mostly defensive duties 5; Billy Twelvetrees (for Farrell, 63) Made try-saving tackle 6; Marland Yarde (for May 60) Looked sharp after twice coming on for May as blood replacement 7.

SAMOA

Ken Pisi 6; Alapati Leiua 6, Reynold Lee-Lo 5, Johnny Leota 5, David Lemi 6; Tusi Pisi 7, Kahn Fotuali’i 6; Sakaria Taulafo 5, Ti’i Paulo 6, Census Johnston 5, Teofilo Paulo 6, Kane Thompson 6, Maurie Fa’asavalu 6, Jack Lam 6, Ofisa Treviranus 6.
