The American jeweler died in his sleep at his Manhattan apartment, his spokesperson confirmed.

His customers included legends such as Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, Audrey Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, Greta Garbo, Babe Paley and Diana Vreeland.

A documentary about Lane’s 50-year career is in the works, and will include interviews with Barbara Bush and Joan Collins, who recalls when she was stopped at Customs with Lane’s designs because authorities thought they were genuine diamonds.
