Friday, Nov. 27

► Black Friday Hike: The Alley Giant

Where: Meet at Alley Pond Park Adventure Center in Alley Pond Park, Winchester Boulevard near Union Turnpike, Little Neck Bay
When: 1 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

Forget shopping this Black Friday. Instead, go for a free hike with urban park rangers and meet a tree that is older than the United States. The Alley Giant — a tulip tree, which is estimated to be between 350 and 450 years of age — is the tallest and oldest living organism in the city. It’s 134 feet tall with a circumference of 18.6 feet.

► Holiday Wreath Workshop for Kids

Where: Ridgewood Queens Library branch, 20-12 Madison St., Ridgewood
When: 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Learn to make holiday wreaths at this hands-on, free workshop for children ages 7-12. By the end of the afternoon you will be able to create your own beautiful holiday arrangement to take home.

► What Border Have You Crossed? Interactive Exhibit

Where: Queens Museum, Flushing Meadows-Corona Park
When: 2 p.m. to 4 p.m.

Marcus Haraldsson is the director of Bordr, an international group that examines political and metaphorical borders. He has organized an interactive exhibit at the museum and will be on hand Nov. 27 to discuss his project, which works to highlight the various borders crossed internationally and in Queens.  

“Dr. Strangelove” Screening

Where: Museum of the Moving Image, 36-01 35th Ave., Astoria 
When: 7 p.m. 

Catch a screening of Stanley Kubrick’s 1964 Cold War classic, showing as part of the museum’s "Walkers: Hollywood Afterlives in Art and Artifact" exhibit. Tickets are $12 and include admission to the museum during gallery hours. 

Saturday, Nov. 28

 Holiday Season Rummage Sale

Where: Briarwood Queens Library branch, 85-12 Main St, Briarwood
When: noon to 3 p.m.

Looking for interesting holiday gifts? Nothing is better than a good book. Shop at the Briarwood Library and support the Queens Library through this Buy A Book fundraiser.

► Small Business Saturday     

Where: 82nd Street between 37th and Baxter avenues, Jackson Heights and Elmhurst
When: All day Saturday

Snag a free tote bag while shopping discounts at the small stores on 82nd Street, including City Jeans, Diva NY and Perfume Market. There will also be live entertainment

See the Winners of Nikon's Small World Photomicrography Competition

Where: NYSCI, 47-01 111th St, Corona
When: Through February

The camera company's annual contest honors close-up images that showcase the wonder of our world, and the winning photos will be on display through February. Check out the top prize, a photo of a bee eye covered in pollen, taken by a high school teacher from Australia. There were more than 2,000 entries from more than 80 countries.

► New York Road Runners Open Run 

Where: Astoria Park, meet in front of the rest area near the running track
When: 9 a.m.

Burn off some of those Thanksgiving calories by joining the New York Road Runners for its weekly open run in Astoria Park. Runners with strollers and dogs are welcome. 

Sunday, Nov. 29

► “Ritual Industry” Lecture and Dance

Where: Resobox Gallery, 41-26 27th St., Long Island City
When: 7 p.m.

This lecture and dance performance are part of the gallery’s current "Japanese Ritual Industry: Silk, Rice & Tea” exhibit, featuring a collection of hand-painted photographs depicting the productions of rice, silk and tea in Japan during the 19th century. Lecturer Helen Moss will lead the discussion and perform a short dance. The event is free.
