Tootsie is the greatest film ever made. Or at least that’s what a group of actors apparently believe.
A poll of 73 stars, including Juliette Binoche, Cillian Murphy, Brie Larson and Andy Serkis, placed the 1982 comedy at the top of a new list, assembled by Time Out New York. The film, which stars Dustin Hoffman as an actor who dresses up as a woman to get a role, is an unlikely winner, towering over The Godfather in second place and The Godfather Part II at No 6.
Other surprisingly high entries include the John Cassavetes drama A Woman Under the Influence in third place and porn saga Boogie Nights at No 8.
Each actor submitted their 10 personal favourites, from which a ranked set of 100 films was assembled. Interesting choices include ‘All of Orson Welles’s movies’ at No 4 for Juliette Binoche and Love & Basketball star Sanaa Lathan opting to honour Love & Basketball.
It’s a vastly different list to a critics-led BBC poll conducted earlier this month, which saw Citizen Kane, Vertigo and 2001: a Space Odyssey in the top five.
The actors’ top 10 is as follows:
1. Tootsie
2. The Godfather
3. A Woman Under the Influence
4. Cinema Paradiso
5. To Kill a Mockingbird
6. The Godfather Part II
7. Annie Hall
8. Boogie Nights
9. The Red Shoes
10. Taxi Driver
