7th Annual Accordion Noir Festival: Free (Reed) Association
The Accordion Noir Festival partners with Vancouver New Music for the festival closing night show featuring the  much-anticipated appearance of Miss Murgatroid, a pioneer of avant-experimental accordion who rose to prominence in Portland in the 1990's. Her performance marks the end of a ten-year musical hiatus, during which time she built a career as a photographer and directed music videos, working with the likes of Mastodon and Bob Mould. The evening also marks an exciting new partnership between The Accordion Noir Society and Vancouver New Music and includes performances by Sick Boss, featuring accordionist Tyson Naylor alongside JUNO-award winning guitarist\composer Cole Schmidt and cellist Peggy Lee.

Experimental accordionatrix Alicia J. Rose performs as Miss Murgatroid, a fantastically strange musical project built on Rose's inimitable melodic soundscapes which are coaxed, cajoled and distorted from a 1930's Dallape accordion. Rose's most recent release was 2008's Hearts & Daggers, a collaboration with avant-garde composer/violinist Petra Haden. The album was described by Popmatters as "sophisticated, anachronistic, naïve, lush, and minimalist" and praised widely for its unearthly and uncategorizable compositions which drew comparisons ranging from baroque orchestrals to Tom Waits. Impossible to pin it may be, but all agree it's a fascinating brew, featuring lushly ambient dreamworlds, tender monster tales and frenetic forays into the dramatically arcane.

Sick Boss presents a cherry-picked cast of Vancouver musical all-stars, with Juno award winning keyboardist Tyson Naylor on accordion, they perform Cole Schmidt's cinematic and cerebral originals alongside unexpected covers. Drawing together influences from creative improvisation, rock, folk and modern jazz, Sick Boss charts the broad musical landscape of contemporary accordion featuring Peggy Lee cello, James Meger bass, Dan Gaucher drums and Jeremy Page clarinet.

The final installment of the festival cabaret 'tweener' series, Dr. Jacks Jackpot of Cabaret Curios, will deliver a final and rarefied cabaret piece.
