Brocco, Rivera Lead Oneonta to Win Over Brockport

Red Dragons clinch third seed in SUNYAC Tournament

The SUNY Oneonta softball team finished of its series with Brockport Sunday, completing the sweep in a 10-7 victory. Oneonta scored in every inning to claim the win. Sophomore Jenn Brocco and senior Brianna Rivera (Pomona/North Rockland) were at the forefront of the Red Dragons' success each going 3-3 and drawing a walk. Brocco plated a pair and scored a pair of run, while Rivera drove in three and crossed the dish once.
 
The visitors struck first in the top of the first on back-to-back RBI groundouts.
 
Not to be outdone, the Red and White posted three runs in the bottom of the frame. Freshman Ashley Lefebvre (Waterford/Waterford-Halfmoon) led off by reaching on a fielding error by the third baseman, before moving to second on a bunt single by senior Nicole Marzillo (Bay Shore/Bay Shore). The pair executed a double steal before Rivera knocked a two-RBI single up the middle. Two batters later, Brocco recorded her first base knock with a two-out RBI double to center.
 
Brockport answered with a solo shot to open the second inning, before Marzillo put the hosts back on top with a one-out RBI double to center. 
 
The Golden Eagles put up three in the top of the third on a one-out bases clearing double by Nicole Atkins. Oneonta retaliated in the bottom of the inning with one run. Brocco led off with a single up the middle. Rookie Cori McFall (Pleasant Valley/Arlington) singled through the left side before junior Jamie Whittam (Saugerties/Saugerties) loaded the bases with a bunt single. Brocco scored on a sac fly by Lefebvre on the next play.
 
Senior pitcher Rachel Hitt (Boonville/Adirondack Central) retired the side in order in the top of the fourth before the offense regained the lead with a two-run bottom frame. Rivera and sophomore Katie O'Gorman (Clifton Park/Shenendehowa) each singled with one out. Junior Meaghan Foster (Walden/Valley Central), pinch running for Rivera, beat the throw home on a single to left by Brocco. Sophomore Marlene Cuevas (Wappingers Falls/Roy C. Ketcham)a brought O'Gorman home with a hard hit single to third.
 
Brockport tied the game at seven in the top of the fifth on a mishandled ball by Cuevas. The offense picked her up in the bottom of the frame, getting that run back. Junior Traci Lichtenstein (Plainview/JFK) sent a two-out single through the right side. Junior Kristyn Neroda (Pearl River/Pearl River), pinch running for Lichtenstein, swiped second before scoring on a single through the right side by Rivera.
 
After a lead off walk, Brockport's Brianna Harris lined into a double play before Hitt got Erika Lazzaro to pop up the Brocco to end the top of the sixth inning. Oneonta tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the frame. Brocco drew a walk to open things up. Cuevas singled through the let side before McFall laid down a bunt single to load the bases. Brocco scored on a sac fly by Whittam. Lefebvre reloaded the bases with a bunt single before a wild pitch scored Cuevas.
 
Hitt picks up the win in relief.  The senior threw 4.1 innings of two-hit ball, allowing just one unearned run with a strikeout and two walks. Sophomore Sabrina DeAngelis (East Meadow/Kellenberg Memorial) threw 2.2 innings as the starter allowing six runs, four earned, on six hits with a strikeout and two walks.

Rivera was 3-3 on the day driving in three and scoring once.
 
Brocco's 3-3 day came with a double, a pair of RBI and two runs scored.
 
Cuevas was 2-3 at the plate with an RBI and run scored.
 
Lefebvre swiped a pair of bases, she leads the team with 12
 
O'Gorman and Rivera are each on eight game hit streaks.
 
Oneonta is scheduled to travel to Ithaca tomorrow before turning its attention to the SUNYAC Tournament. The Red and White open the tournament, hosted by Cortland, when they take on Buffalo St. at 1 p.m.
