Doomadgee police travelled for eight hours and 340km to rescue a group stranded in Gunumula overnight.
Police were contacted by a 45-year-old Doomadgee woman who had limited phone reception and dwindling battery life.
The woman said she had been stranded about 170km from the Doomadgee police sta 
tion for the previous four days with three adults and four children aged between two and 13 after a fishing trip went awry when their vehicle broke down.
The woman said they needed urgent help because they had run out of food and water. One of their group had a medical condition and did not have any medication. Police then lost all communication with her. 
Senior Constable Amit Singh enlisted the assistance of Doomadgee Police Liaison Officer Craig Logan whom had knowledge of this remote area. The officers navigated their police 4WD at night through bush tracks, crocodile infested creek crossings and salt flats to take food, water and medication to the stranded family.
Police Liaison Officer Logan and Senior Constable Singh completed the last 10km of the search on foot before seeing a campfire from a distance.
The officers were able to follow footprints from the campsite to a ranger camp in their vehicle, finding the group dehydrated and hungry, but otherwise in good health.
The group were transported in two trips to the Doomadgee Hospital for treatment.
District Inspector Trevor Kidd said: “This was incredible work by Doomadgee police and a great example of the work our people do in the remote parts of the State to ensure the safety of our community.”
