Hammond was in charge with recent rebuild in Milwaukee

ORLANDO, Fla. — Milwaukee Bucks general John Hammond has been hired by the Orlando Magic.

The 62-year-old Hammond, who was with the Bucks the past nine seasons, will now be the GM for the Magic.

Despite Hammond rebuilding the Bucks from its 15-67 record in 2013-14, to a playoff team with an optimistic future, his leaving may not be a huge loss, according to the Milwaukee Journal.

It was widely known that Hammond, if he stayed in Milwaukee, would remain as the general manager for this upcoming season before moving into a consulting role. Assistant general manager Justin Zanik, who was brought in last summer as the heir apparent, would then shift into the general manager role.

Hammond will now work under Jeff Weltman, the Magic president of baskeball operations that worked under Hammond as an assistant GM with the Bucks from 2008-13.

In the last few years with the Bucks, Hammond has brought in the Bucks young core featuring Giannis Antetokounmpo, Jabari Parker and Khris Middleton along with rookies Malcolm Brogdon and Thon Maker.
