Assisting in 10,000 births, Kalamazoo nurse delivers babies across generations

KALAMAZOO, MI -- When Val Osborne of Delton gave birth to her daughter, Laura, 29 years ago, Cindy Howes, a nurse with Borgess Birthing Center, helped. When Laura gave birth to her daughter, Esperanza, on Sept. 3, House again assisted.

"We remembered Cindy's kindness in 1985," said Val Osborne.

"We were delighted to again experience the care of this wonderful nurse. I brought videotapes showing Cindy helping my husband cut Laura's umbilical cord and making the tiny footprints."

Howes has assisted in the birth of about 10,000 babies since 1966.

"I'm honored to help two generations of fine people and be a small part of the miracle of birth," Howes said.
