Breakaway Proves Costly As JCU Men's Soccer Falls To DePauw In 2014 Lid Lifter

Karol Boryka had two of John Carroll's 17 shots against DePauw Friday
Box Score As season opening match ups go, John Carroll and DePauw staged one Friday that very well could have been held as part of the 2013 postseason party.

Trouble was, despite one team being 14-2-3 (DePauw) and the other being 15-4-1 (John Carroll), neither was extended an invitation to the NCAA soiree.

With those gaudy 2013 resumes in hand, the Blue Streaks and Tigers played a classic battle of styles in the opening match of the 2014 Ohio Northern University Invitational Friday afternoon in Ada, Ohio. Despite relentless pressure that added up to nearly 20 shots for JCU, it was the counter-attacking style of DePauw that won out. A breakaway goal in the 70th minute by Julian Gonzales proved to be the difference as the Tigers edged the Streaks, 1-0.

The Blue Streaks won the shot advantage handily, 17-9, but could not find the back of the net. Justin Miller and Brian Potocnik each had four shots to lead the attack.

Zach Fehrenbach had two saves in goal.

John Carroll (0-1) will face Muskegon (0-1) in what becomes the de facto consolation match at 5:00 pm on Saturday in Ada. Muskegeon lost by a 9-0 count to host Ohio Northern in Friday's other match.
