NEW HAVEN (AP) — The U.S. Justice Department says the Wallingford police department has agreed to improve training of its personnel in dealing with people who are deaf.
The office of the U.S. attorney for Connecticut, Deirdre Daly, said Friday that the town entered into the agreement as federal authorities were investigating allegations that the police department failed to communicate effectively with people who are deaf and hard of hearing.
The agreement requires the police department to ensure its policies and practices are nondiscriminatory and to provide appropriate services for deaf people.
Daly said the town has been cooperative throughout the investigation. A spokesman for the police department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
