Greetings!

Disney sure knows how to make a movie! My co-written book The Finest Hours movie will premiere January 29th on the big screen. Chris Pine, Casey Affleck and Holiday Grainger have the lead roles, but look for me as an extra in the ballroom scene. (They put me in a suit from 1952, and I quipped that I could have saved them the money - I have the same suit at home that I just recently stopped wearing!) The movie will be shown in 3D in over 70 countries, and we recently released a middle reader version of the book (approx. for ages 10-15).
New Book: So Close to Home

Although watching the filming of the movie was fun, most of my time in the past year was devoted to finishing the writing of a new book,
So Close To Home: The True Story of an American Family's Fight for Survival in WWII.

I co-authored the book with journalist Alison O'Leary, and we loved researching this amazing story that took place in 1942. At the heart of this survival story is The Downs family, who were on a merchant ship not far from the mouth of the Mississippi when they were torpedoed by a German U-boat. All four family members were blown into the ocean in different directions and we chronicle their harrowing ordeal. But because we had access to the War Diary of the U-boat Commander that sank their ship, we also follow events that were happening on the submarine.
Readers will experience this WWII forgotten drama from two different perspectives. And best of all, eight-year old Sonny Downs, who survived the U-boat attack, is now 81 years old and has worked with us every step of the way.

Some of my other books can be ordered directly from my web site and I can personalize them for Christmas gifts. These include two recent co-written books :
  • Inns & Adventures: A History and Explorers Guide to VT, NH and the Berkshires (includes lots of overlooked history such as Rogers Rangers, story of captives during the Indian Wars, and Revolutionary War stories).
  • Derek's Gift: A True Story of Love, Courage and Lesson's Learned (This is an inspirational story of resilience written for both adults and young adults.)
  • Free gift! Order any two books from my website and request a free copy of my first book Exploring the Hidden Charles.

Business Speaking
A couple of the highlights of my summer and fall included giving inspirational multi-media talks at colleges and businesses across the country. I even spent a few days in Kansas (and enjoyed the wide open spaces) and Washington state's Olympic Peninsula (incredible rainforests).

My new presentation
"Leadership Lessons from The Finest Hours" is the topic that is getting the most bookings. (If you help secure a business lecture you win the Tougias "library.")

Another of my favorite speaking days was much closer to home: giving the keynote at the dedication of the new library in Tiverton R.I. To see the impact libraries have had on my life, watch this clip of my dedication speech.
