Book Reviews

What Doesn't Kill Her

By Carla Norton

Reviewed by Sue Wilder

Despite attempts at an early release, Daryl Wayne Flint remains locked up in the forensic wing of a psychiatric hospital. He kidnapped Reeve LeClaire over ten years ago and held her captive for about four years. Thanks to a car crash when Flint was transporting her in the trunk to another location, LeClaire was rescued. Flint, allegedly suffering from post concussive syndrome, was sentenced to serve his time in the psychiatric ward.

Flint has lulled his keepers with model behavior while secretly plotting an escape with help from the outside.   He escapes and begins a killing spree as a means of exacting revenge. The authorities warn LeClaire who has been attending college and trying to recover her own life.

LeClaire realizes that she is probably the only one who knows how Flint thinks. Instead of hiding out, she travels to Washington State to help the authorities, and bingo, she becomes the bait as Flint continues to evade capture.

Ms. Norton introduced LeClaire in the riveting crime thriller The Edge of Normal. Both books read as stories that are snatched from the headlines, too real and very suspenseful. The psychological point of view is compelling and the characters are fascinating.

What Doesn't Kill Her is well written with strong characters. It is a fast read in that it is difficult to put down. However, the story stays with you.

Second Life

By S.J. Watson

Reviewed by Joanne Sinchuk

When I read S.J. Watson's first book, Before I Go to Sleep, I thought it was one of the finest psychological thrillers I'd read in a long time. How could he possibly top that? Well, Second Life almost does.

Julia is living a safe, pleasant life in London with her physician husband, and young son. When she gets the news her sister has been murdered in Paris, she makes it her ultimate goal to find the killer. She goes on a dating site her sister used to frequent, pretending to be her sister, intentionally trying to attract her killer. Instead she meets a man, has an affair, and then everything goes wrong. And I can't really say more about the story without revealing a spoiler!

There are a small number of characters in this book, so I knew that one of them had to be the killer. But I still couldn't figure it out. Lots of twists and turns, and rapid page turning kept me up til very late. Written in the first person present, I was worried I would be annoyed with the point of view, but I found the story and motive so engrossing, it didn't matter at all.

What a talented writer he is! Classic psychological thriller in its best form.

The Redeemers

By Ace Atkins

Reviewed by Rebecca Swope

Ace Atkins has returned to the world of Quinn Colson for his latest thriller. Dealing with the repercussions of the events in The Broken Places, Colson is faced with a horrible decision.

He has been ousted as sheriff, replaced with Rusty Wise, a calm inexperienced moral man. Corrupt county kingpin Johnny Stagg, thinking he's got the new sheriff in his back pocket, believes he's safe from arrest.

Then three criminals throw a big monkey wrench into his plans by breaking into the home of a local lumber mill proprietor, taking out a wall safe that contains over a million dollars. During the long complicated process of covering up the crime, new Sheriff Rusty Wise is killed.

But the money isn't the problem. The problem is a book, kept by the mill owner, containing details of illegal acts over the past few decades. And this book could cause Colson long-lasting grief.

Between saving his sister or saving himself, Colson really has only one choice.

Highly recommended. G.P. Putnam's & Sons 26.95
