Björk has urged Scotland to vote ‘yes’ in tomorrow’s Scottish independence referendum.
Writing on her official Facebook page, the Icelander posted slightly altered lyrics from her song ‘Declare Independence’, adding the words “Scotland! Scotland! Scotland!”. Scroll down to view the Michel Gondry-directed video for ‘Declare Independence’, which was released as a single in 2008.
Björk is the latest musician to pledge her support for the ‘Yes’ campaign. Stuart Braithwaite of Scottish post-rock band Mogwai has been vocal in his desire for an independent Scotland and he yesterday (September 16) tweeted a picture of a household decorated in ‘Yes’ signs snapped while out canvassing.
Mogwai were among the artists to appear at pro-independence event A Night for Scotland last Sunday (September 14). Franz Ferdinand, Amy Macdonald, Frightened Rabbit, Eddi Reader and Deacon Blue’s Lorraine McIntosh and Ricky Ross also performed to the crowd of almost 3000.
“It feels incredible to be standing here on the edge if this stage tonight on the edge of history,” Franz Ferdinand’s Alex Kapranos told the crowd. “I’m not the kind of guy that’s used to making any sort of speech. I’m a man of few words, tonight I’m a man of one word and that word is ‘Yes’.”
Among the musicians to urge Scottish voters to keep Scotland as part of the United Kingdom are Mick Jagger, Sting, Brian Ferry and David Gilmour, who were among 200 famous people to sign an open letter last month as part of the Let’s Stay Together campaign.
Voters go to the polls tomorrow (September 18) to decide on whether Scotland should be an independent country. A survey conducted by Ipsos-MORI puts support for ‘Yes’ on 49 percent and ‘No’ on 51 percent when undecideds are excluded.
