(Waukesha, Wis.) - A banner and historical significance is on the line when the Carroll University football team travels to Macalester College on Saturday for the first time since 1954. The Pioneers are 3-0 all-time against the Scots, with all three meetings taking place in the 1950's.
The two programs first met in 1951 in Waukesha with Carroll earning a 6-0 victory. The Pioneers then traveled to Macalester in 1952 and 1954, winning 13-0 and 21-13, respectively.
Macalester, in its first year as an affiliate Midwest Conference member in football, stands in the way of the Pioneers claiming the MWC's north division title and securing a spot in the MWC's championship game. Like Carroll, the Scots enter Saturday's game with a perfect 3-0 division record.
Formerly members of the Minnesota Intercollegiate Athletic Conference, Macalester opened the 2014 season with an impressive 17-14 victory over Carleton College. The Scots fell to Hamline University (23-13) in week two but have since rattled off five consecutive wins over Grinnell College (21-16), Knox College (34-0), Ripon College (28-20), Beloit College (28-21) and Lawrence University (33-0).
Macalester has been impressive in its first MWC season but pales in comparison to the destruction Carroll has put forth on its opponents. The Pioneers have outscored their opponents 281-74 while starting the campaign at 7-0 overall and 3-0 in the north division. Last Saturday's victory at Ripon College gave Carroll its first 7-0 start to a season since 1936. A victory over Macalester would improve the Pioneers to 8-0 for the first time since 1925.
