Local Roundup: Mountain View”s Kyle Brocklehurst wins Santa Cruz Half Marathon

Mountain View”s Kyle Brocklehurst finished with the overall fastest time of 1 hour, 16 minutes and 53 seconds to win the Santa Cruz Half Marathon on Sunday.

The 27-year-old had a mile pace of 5:52 during the race, which began on West Cliff Drive, went up the Pacific coastline to Old Cove Landing Trail and finished at Cowell”s Beach in Santa Cruz.

Ivan Rodriguez followed in second place at 1:19:03, while Peter Kruse of San Francisco took third in 1:19:37.

Patrick Williams of Capitola was the top local finisher in sixth place (1:21:33).

Jasmine Sessions of Morgan Hill was the top female finisher at the half marathon (1:23:14).

In the 10 kilometer race, Alejandro Alcaraz of Salinas won in 32:58, while Michael Ingardia of San Jose placed second in 35:18 and Nathan Fletcher of Mountain View was third in 35:34.

Casey Shutte of Santa Cruz (36:15) was the top local finisher in the 10k and Santa Cruz”s Samantha Forde (37:01) was the top female finisher, setting a new course record by 1:05.

Chris Knoff (19:51) won the 5k race, with San Jose”s Keith Hirsamura following in second (20:13) and Patrice Fernald in third (20:19).

Fernald was also the top female finisher, while Diane Uyeda of Capitola (22:59) was the top local finisher in the 5k.

Junior golf

Harbor duo shines >> Deane Rinaldi shot a final-round 69 for a 144 total and second place at the NCGA Junior Spring Series IV held at Deer Ridge Golf Course and Shadow Lakes G.C. in Brentwood.

Harbor teammate Ryker Barnes shot 70 for a 146 total and third place.

Redding”s Jake Smolinsky was medalist with a 143 total.

Men”s tennis

Cal Lutheran 5, UCSC 4 >> UC Santa Cruz”s No. 6 singles player George Goetz defeated Fergus Scott 6-1, 3-6, 7-6 despite the Slugs” loss to Cal Lutheran at Westmont College in Santa Barbara.

No. 4 Kyle Richter beat Sean Handley 6-2, 6-1 and No. 2 Max Littlejohn won 6-4, 6-4 over Alex Nichols for UCSC (5-9), which will end its regular season run at the Ojai Valley Tournament on April 25-27.

Eulie Scandalis and Goetz also defeated Alex Nichols and Connor Treacy 8-6 in No. 1 doubles play for the Slugs.

Women”s tennis

Claremont-MUDD-SCRIPPS 8, UCSC 1 >> UC Santa Cruz suffered a lopsided loss at Claremont Mudd-Scripps to close out the regular season.

The Slugs (2-16) will compete next in the Great South Athletic Conference Championships on April 25-27.

UCSC also lost to Redlands, 9-0, on Saturday and Chapman, 5-4, on Thursday.
