Brad Pitt Called “Hitler’s Dream” by Zach Galifianakis

Brad Pitt was called “Hitler’s dream,” by comedian, Zach Galifianakis, on Zach’s web series Between Two Ferns recently. While Galifianakis is a master at creating potentially uncomfortable situations, he has managed to occasionally offend the people he is “interviewing” for his web series, including when President Obama was interviewed by him. It can be, at times, difficult to know when Zach is joking and when he is being serious.

That is a quality about Zach Galifiankis that his many fans like about him, that he can act in what would ordinarily be considered to be an offensive manner, but get away with it because that is a part of the crazy character he plays, one who considers nothing to be off-limits or sacred. He is a comedian who people either love and think is a genius, or who others think goes too far in his attempts to yank the chains of those he interviews.

Does Zach Galifianakis sometimes go too far? Brad Pitt, 50, might not have totally realized what he was getting himself in for when he agreed to be on Between Two Ferns. He definitely looked uncomfortable at times, like when Zach addressed someone who was off-camera during the interview and groused that the last person he had interviewed was a president, and now he said he was “back to interviewing dumb actors.”

Zach added to the discomfort Brad Pitt must have been feeling by purposefully butchering the actor’s name, calling him “Bart Pitt,” and saying that he had acted in the movie 12 Years a Salve (No, that is not a misspelling). Instead of mentioning that Brad Pitt was currently starring in Fury, Galifianakis called the movie “Furry.”

Brad Pitt acted amiable and tried to overlook anything that could be considered to be an insult that Zach was saying. However, try as he might, it must have been difficult for Brad to maintain his composure when Galifianakis asked him questions like how old he was when he lost his virginity.

Brad did not blow up at Zach, who then began to talk about when he had lost his own virginity. Brad Pitt said that he would “really not like to hear that.”

The one-liners and uncomfortable moments were just beginning. Zach Galifianakis turned up the heat by going all “Yes, I’m going to joke about Nazis with you, like it or not,” on Pitt.

Most actors would have probably walked off the set at the next comments Zach uttered. He told Brad Pitt that he thought it was “weird” that Pitt played “a lot of people that are kind of Nazi haters.” When Pitt asked him he said that, Zach answered it was weird because Pitt looked “like Hitler’s dream.”

Again, Brad Pitt played along with Zach, agreeing that there was some truth in that, and stating “I understand the conundrum of it all.”

At one point in the interview, Galifianakis gave Brad Pitt a gift that was wrapped up. By the shape of it, Brad believed it was probably a bong. He called it a “bassoon,” telling Zach that he was “a dad now, and adding that nobody in his house used a bassoon “anymore.”

Upping the awkwardness quotient yet further, Zach interrupted the interview to introduce his friend, fellow comedian Louis C.K., who proceeded to crack jokes referring to the relatively unfunny topics of ISIS and Ebola.

Zach Galifianakis was not quite done with making Brad Pitt feel uncomfortable. He looked disappointed and incredulous when Brad Pitt told him that he did not ever dress up in tuxedos with actor George Clooney and then call themselves “a couple of Dapper Dans.” Also, Zach asked Brad Pitt how it felt living “in your wife’s shadow.” He said he had once been in a similar relationship, when he had gone out with Condoleezza Rice.

Zach also could not resist throwing in a jab at Brad Pitt about his first wife, Jennifer Aniston, as well as the appearance Brad made on Friends, which Aniston starred in. Zach asked Brad what it was like when he first met Jennifer Aniston. He said was it like “when Ross first saw Rachel.” Zach asked Brad if he had ever “seen” Friends.

Did Zach Galifianakis go too far when he messed with Brad Pitt during the interview and called him “Hitler’s dream,” or was it all just done in fun? Brad showed a great deal of restraint by not clocking Zach, but he was a good sport during the entire interview. Brad Pitt had to have had an idea what he was getting himself into when he agreed to appear on Between Two Ferns, but he still appeared to look a bit ticked off at points during the interview, particularly right at the end, when he spit his chewing gum at Zach’s face.
