An attempted arson this morning at the Yolo County Courthouse is under investigation, according to court officials.
The front entrance of the courthouse was blocked off with caution tape on Wednesday morning, several bailiffs indicating that someone tried to set the building on fire Tuesday night and that they were “airing out the building.”
The courthouse reopened to the public and court staff at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, although the interior still smelled of smoke.
Fire Department officials were unable to comment on the fire because they were not called to respond.
“The Sheriff”s department has opened an investigation and we have every reason to believe that that investigation will help us determine the person or persons who are responsible for that attempt,” said Presiding Judge Steven Basha.
The courthouse is equipped with camera and security technology throughout the facility that should assist in determining the suspect or suspects. Due to the ongoing investigation, the court is unable to comment further.
