Good news for Poetry Society Kaddy Benyon, who not only came third in this year’s Elmet Poetry Prize, but also had a poem commended in the same competition. Joy, too, for Poetry Society Member Virginia Astley, who was commended.

Kaddy was shortlisted in the Frogmore Poetry Prize this year, and longlisted in the Poetry London Competition, while Virginia was second in last year’s Plough Prize.

The Elmet Poetry Prize was won by Penny Boxall, who only this month won the Edwin Morgan Poetry Award, and second was Jon Stone, who won the Poetry London Competition in July.

The Elmet Trust promotes public awareness and understanding of Ted Hughes’s life and works. Judges this year were Steve Ely and Anne Caldwell, and poets were invited to take their inspiration from some of Ted Hughes’s poems: Ravens, The City, Cat, and Sketching a Thatcher.
