Sam Warburton expects some Wales team-mates in France to return home

The Wales captain, Sam Warburton, believes a number of his international team-mates currently playing in France would welcome the chance to return.

Last week the Racing Métro players Jamie Roberts and Dan Lydiate were linked with a surprise return to Wales to join Warburton on a dual contract that ties him to the Welsh Rugby Union and one of the regions.

The head coach, Warren Gatland, has £3.3m to spend on dual contracts after the recent agreement between the WRU and the regions and is keen to reverse the trend that saw a number of his internationals, including Jonathan Davies and Leigh Halfpenny, head to France.

Roberts greeted the reports of his imminent return with shock but Lydiate, who has struggled to adjust in France, is understood to be more keen on a return and Warburton expects a number of players to return from the continent, citing the medical treatment and a limit to the number of matches played as key reason.

Warburton told the Times: “The medical treatment you’ll get [in Wales] is second to none, which I don’t think is always the case in France. It won’t happen with a click of the fingers, but now the contracts have been sorted out there will be some players interested in coming home.”
