MEMPHIS, TN (WMC) - Tennessee State Representative Dan Howell wants the slow pokes on the interstate, the ones in the left lane, out of the way. He has proposed a bill that would make the fast lane on the highways with three lanes wide or make a passing lane only.

Everett Agnew likes the idea that the left lane on the intestate should just be for passing.

"It think it's cool. I'm serious," said Agnew.

If anyone is caught sitting in the fast lane, they will get a $50 fine.

It is not enforceable during bad weather, wrecks or legitimate reasons for staying in the fast lane.

"I don't like the laws on the highway. It reminds me of California, like two people in the car. It's a $100 fine,"driver Rob Snell said.

Laws similar to Howell's are already in effect in other states like Texas, Georgia and Indiana. Howell believes the law would keep the busy interstates moving and safer. He thinks it would cut down on road rage.

"You got people with road rage. You don't need no passing lane for those crazy folks," driver Joyce Nisby said.

Nisby thinks the slow poke law needs to take the fast lane out of town.

"Leave it alone," Nisby said.

Howell hopes the bill will go into effect in July next year.
