New York Pest Expo 2014NEW YORK—The 2014 New York Pest Expo: “Renewal Edition,” hosted by Bug Off Pest Control Center, takes place Nov. 13 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. at The Armory in Manhattan. The speaker lineup includes:

Joe Barile, BCE

Joe Barile, BCE

Joe Barile, BCE, Bayer Environmental Science: “General Entomology for PMPs”: What the urban pest management professional (PMP) needs to know about practical entomology, including arthropod characteristics; insect anatomy, physiology, life cycles, environmental niche; taxonomy and representative orders. Barile is the technical service lead for Bayer Environmental Science’s Professional Products Division. His responsibilities include providing technical and training support to the internal BES staff, and externally to PMPs and public vector control agencies in the United States and Canada.

Barile, who returns to the Expo for a second time, holds a degree in entomology from the University of Massachusetts. He has been involved in urban and public health pest management since 1979, holding positions with major integrated pest management (IPM) product manufacturers, in public mosquito control, as a university extension entomologist, as a pest control technician and as the technical director of a multi-branch pest control firm. He is a member of the Entomological Society of America, is a Board Certified Entomologist, and a member of the American Mosquito Control Association.

Dr. Bobby Corrigan, RMC Pest Management Consulting: “Rodent Management Updates”: In his third appearance at the Expo, Corrigan will focus on the relationship between rodents and climatic events, as well as investigation, trapping and baiting strategies; updates on rodent behavior and biology; and why rodent-proofing is the ultimate technique.

Corrigan is director of RMC Pest Management Consulting, Richmond, Ind. He has published more than 150 industry technical publication, including as co-author of Truman’s Scientific Guide to Pest Management Operations. In 2008, he was inducted into the Pest Management Hall of Fame.

Jeff McGovern: “A Survey of Essential Equipment”: Find success in the use of mechanical techniques: vacuums, thermal units and freezing systems. Make the greatest use of monitoring and trapping devices. Learn about the latest green developments. Master the art of exclusion and encasement.

McGovern has 40 years of experience in pest management. A frequent speaker at the Purdue Pest Management Conference, he has a reputation for providing clear and engaging presentations. He has collaborated with U.S. Department of Agriculture scientists and researchers in the areas of pest control, sanitation and food handling. He has authored a number of industry articles, and currently writes the “Fact vs. Fiction” column for PMP Magazine. This is his third appearance as a speaker at the New York Pest Expo.

Dan Gordon, CPA: “Managing Your Business’ Key Performance Indicators”: In his first presentation for the Expo, Gordon will explore the key performance indicators (KPIs) that are critical to growing a successful pest management firm. These KPIs include important operational and financial numbers that need to be in the crosshairs of any owner or manager who is looking to grow his or her business.

Gordon brings more than 20 years of experience in accounting and managing high-growth pest control companies. As an owner, manager, chief financial officer and industry consultant, he has been involved with the development of several pest control companies from inception to the $15 million in annual sales levels and beyond. He is the managing member and is responsible for all aspects of client work at PCO Bookkeepers, which also contributes the monthly “Mergers & Acquisitions” column in PMP magazine.

Dr. Bill Robinson, B&G Equipment Co.: “Hit Them Where They Live: Pests and Their Harborages”: Proper pest identification leads to precise harborage site identification. Zeroing in on harborage sites leads to precise monitoring. Knowing where the pest lives also leads to targeted and minimal delivery of chemicals.

Robinson is technical director of B&G Equipment. He has served as a professor and director of the Urban Pest Control Research Center at Virginia Polytechnic Institute. He is also a visiting professor at Zhejiang University, China. Robinson is the author of more than 200 papers in scientific and trade journals in the U.S., Europe and Asia. Along with Lou Sorkin, “Dr. Bill” has the record for the most presentations offered at the New York Pest Expo.

Dr. Nicola Gallagher, Syngenta Professional Products: “Termites: New Findings”: New findings in termite behavior. A review of the termiticide development process and of the available classes of chemistry. What are the properties of an ideal termiticide?

Gallagher joined Syngenta Professional Products in 2012 and serves as the technical services manager for the Midwest and Northeast Professional Pest Management market. Gallagher has more than 10 years of experience in urban entomology (and a particular fondness for termites). She maintains responsibility for all phases of field testing and technical support within her region, and coordinates numerous research programs with university researchers and cooperators. Gallagher holds a bachelor’s of science degree from the College of Mount Saint Joseph (Cincinnati), along with a master’s of science and doctoral degree from The Ohio State University (Columbus, Ohio). This is her first presentation at the New York Pest Expo.

Lou Sorkin, BCE, Entsult Associates, Inc.: “What Got Stuck? – A Guide to Glueboard Captures”: A tour of glueboards used in pest management. Proper trap placement and management. Monitoring and assessment techniques. The link between captured specimens and environmental factors conducive to their presence. Control options available based on samples collected.

Sorkin, a Board Certified Entomologist, began his career at the American Museum of Natural History in 1978. He has been the treasurer for the New York Entomological Society for more than 25 years and is the founder of Entsult Associates, Inc., an entomology consulting company. A popular lecturer on medical, veterinary and forensic entomology, Sorkin has appeared on a number of TV, radio and Web interviews; he has also been a featured speaker at the New York Pest Expo for the last seven years.

Sorkin is one of the nation’s leading figures in the study of bed bug behavior and biology. He has co-authored many papers and abstracts dealing with spiders, flies, mites and ticks, and has a special interest in the use of insects as food, a discipline called entomophagy. Along with Dr. Bill Robinson, Sorkin has the record for the most presentations offered at the New York Pest Expo.
