Buffalo Basketball Game Notes

FT. LAUDERDALE, Fla. – The West Texas A&M men's basketball team grabbed its sixth win in its last seven games and first road victory on Thursday evening as the Buffs defeated Nova Southeastern, 82-66. The Buffs now improve to 6-4 on the season as they were led by freshman David Chavlovich who tallied 20 points while adding five rebounds, six assists, and two steals. With the loss, the Sharks now fall to 4-4 on the year.

Senior Miles Gatewood also had a big game for WT with 16 points as he went 6-for-12 from the field and 4-for-8 from long range. The Buffs shot 29-for-53 from the field as a team (.547) while the home team would go 20-for-53 (.377).

Both teams traded missed baskets in their opening possessions while the Sharks took the early 6-0 lead with a back-to-back buckets beyond the arc by guard Justin Jeangerard by the 18-minute mark. However, the Buffs would quickly tie the contest two minutes later with a triple by Gatewood.

The Buffs then went on a 9-2 run, highlighted by a 3-pointer by Chavlovich and fast-break dunk by freshman Jeff Bonner. That would put the Buffs on top 18-13 with 12:32 left in the half.

NSU pulled back within two points at 20-18 just over 11 minutes remaining; however, WT put together a 14-6 run, giving the Buffs a 34-26 lead heading into the final media timeout of the first frame. After trading a few more buckets, WT would then extend the lead by one to head into the break up 42-33.

The first half featured a balanced scoring attack by the Buffs. Chavlovich led WT with nine as he went 3-for-6 from beyond the arc. Gatewood, senior Antjuan Ball, and freshmen Carl White and Garrett Brockman each tallied six points in the first 20 minutes of action. Eight of the Buffs' 10 active players would record points on the stat sheet in the opening half.

Ball opened up the second half with a statement as he threw down a massive slam dunk down on the fast break after receiving the pass from White to go up 44-33. That double-digit lead would hold consistently over the next several minutes while WT even pushed the advantage to 16, going up 58-42 with 14 minutes remaining.

The Sharks were then able to pull together a 7-0 run of their own to pull back within single digits, cutting the WT lead to nine with just over 12 minutes left. But the Buffs would respond quickly to go up by 21 with under 10 minutes.

The Buffs would consistently hold the advantage through the remainder of the game, finishing off with the 82-66 final score.

Tonight's meeting was the first between the two programs giving WT now the 1-0 series advantage.

The Buffs will return to action on Saturday, Dec. 20, for a neutral site matchup with Missouri-St. Louis. Tipoff from Ft. Lauderdale is scheduled for Noon (C.T.).
